Guys around this time every year new members join and make threads with the title what do i need to do to win in college hoops? So i decided i will make a thread on this topic. It's a list of 14 things i believe most will agree with. But lets get at it
1. Set goals
What i mean by that is what do you wnat to do this season? How much do you want to win? Set realistic goals for yourself
2. Money management
I think in basketball more so than other sports with bad money management you will get destroyed. A couple of 1-3 or 2-4 days could send you into the abyss. Try to bet the right amounts on each game
3. You will have bad days/weeks
I don't care how good you say you are or how good you may be you will have a Saturday where you go 1-4 Or you'll have a 2-8 week where you lose 3 games by a half point. You have to have the mental toughness to push through those times
4. If you can shop around for lines
Now its hard to do with the grey area of the government and off shore betting shops and the fact our government hasn't legalized online bettingbut whether you bet offshore or at a sports book or whereever if you can shop around for the best line. That half point here and there can be the difference in a winning week and a losing week
5. When in doubt Skip it
When in doubt on a game just skip it. Don't waste your time
6. There is no such thing as a lock
To give you an example from LY SMU looked like a lock vs Utah they were down 2-3 with little time left. Larry Brown the SMU HC called a time out to yell at the refs. the refs gave him a technical foul and the SMU bench got a technical foul. Utah got 4 free throws and the ball making all 4. SMU fouled Utah so the Utes got 2 more ft's made them both. SMU half court shot at the buzzer was no good and Utah won and got the cover.
Moral of the story? There are no locks
7. Find a conference to specialize in
There are 351 D-1 teams. There are 32 conferences it is pretty hard to follow all of them. If you can then god bless you But for most of us find a conference or multiple conferences to follow. And they don't have to be the big conferences. Nothing wrong with making money in mid major leagues like the MAC,Sun Belt etc
we have a guy on covers named CarterSECPicks. All he does is follow the SEC in college football and hoops and he does well. Find your niche conference
8. Follow teams in your state
You may say "packers i live in Illinois i could care less about Northern Illinois" Well we have a guy on covers named kahuna who is a USC fan who lives in hawaii. He could give 2 craps and a holler if Hawaii ever wins another game but he follows Hawaii and he does well in their games. No matter the state you live in try to follow those teams. you have an advantage. I follow the schools in Michigan and i do decent. Wins are wins guys
9 Avoid paralysis from analysis
We are all guilty of it at some point but thats the stage where you just fill your brain with too much info and it bites you in the a$$
10. Try to avoid teams who don't make free throws
LY Marshall was the only C-USA team not to cover 10 or more spreads. Why? Well 1 reason was they shot 59.8% from the line. Marshall finished the year 7-19-1 ATS. 99% of the time for me if you don't make free throws i won't bet on you
11. Don't be afraid to bet small teams
I think we have a tendency to not bet on small conference teams because they're from small conferences. Well if train69 wins $100 on Alabama and i win $100 on South Alabama they don't tell me "Sorry packers we only pay $40 because its South Alabama. Who cares what others think sometimes the winners are in small conferences
12. Don't bet Dogs because they're dogs
For the most part there is a reason a dog is a dog because they probably aren't good
13. Try to concentrate on games no one cares about
LY my 1st play of the year was a game we all had circled on the calendar. A matchup between Fordham and Texas State My 2nd paly of the year was on the big Houston-San Jose State game sometimes on these big cards where you have big matchups try to focus where the oddsmakers aren't
14. Don't knock the "alphabet soup" tournaments
You know the NIT,CBI,CIT come tourney most only focus on the big dance come March but you can't go to sleep on the other tourneys. Heck East Carolina won the CIT this past year they got to play 5 extra games. You can't imo just not follow smaller tourneys. If you do you are making a big mistake
Well guys that wraps it up BOL this year
