I'll do my best to anser your question Wookie. I have never read a book on handicapping. Its kinda like the books on playing blackjack: if the system worked that well those guys would be multi millionaires and wouldnt need to write books. Sure, they can help you with math, but thats it. Strategy only takes you so far, then you have to make decisions and deal with other elements (other people at the table, money management, cold deck, bad steaks etc)
I cant really explain the way I cap basketball. I dont use systems, I dont know trends or every stat available. The problem with information is it is available to anybody. People for years ahve thought they could plug numbers into a spreadsheet and it would spit out winners. Problem is computers simply cant account for intangibles like human nature, atmosphere, situation s etc.
I'm more of an eye test guy, mixed with experience and gut feeling. I can look at a line and tell you (usually) what side is gonna get more action. College hoops is tough to follow simply because you cant possibly know all 300+ teams.
Advice? Lots of practice, game and line watching. Know who a team just played and who they play next (I love the sandwich angle). Home court is huge in all sports, but college hoops & football its ridiculous. Be patient. I play a ton of games simply because I think I can go 6/10 much easier than I can go 2/2 or 2/3. They fewer games you play, the higher percentage you must hit to make money (sounds crazy, I know). Dont put all your eggs in one basket. Sure, if you think a game is way off, by all means bet more on that game. This isnt poker and you dont have to go all in. Dont let a bad streak get you down. Its gonna happen.
Take tonight for example. I went agaisnt my own advice and am gonna pay for it with a really bad night. Home teams cleaning up while I rode with a bunch of roadies. No big deal, tomorrow will be a fresh day and a new set of lines.
Always feel free to ask me anything bro.
