RARELY do I cap such a high profile game for men but this is too good to pass up.
Folks, do not buy the snake oil everyone is selling you on the Zags.
This team beat up NOBODIES all year that, outside of St Mary's and BYU, even RUTGERS would have had success against. Their record is a MIRAGE.
Then they have what might be the softest path to the Finals I have ever seen:
SDSU
Northwestern
Xavier
WVU (the only high premium team on this list)
South Carolina (decent but not all-wod)
Wow.
What a godsend of a bracket!!!
And now you get UNC with the redemption angle built up and growing since the moment they were sunk at the buzzer last year? VERY powerful angle! And an obvious one! Makes it no less true! And only ONE point on the spread beats us? What an OUTSTANDING line.
Put your "sharp capper's fedora" back on the rack with the Zags pick. The proven commodity here is UNC. Take them and get paid.
The pick:
UNC -1.5 over Gonzaga

It may be theirs to win with ball in hand on the last possession of the game. Tough to see them losing twice in a row but also tough to see the zags not win after all they've overcome these years to get here. I just hope the officiating is the best we've seen all tournament because it's been awful lately.

What have they overcome? One of the softest divisions in the entire NCAA?? That's pretty easy to overcome!

I've had a dismal tourney this year! Only reason I'm playing this one is the futures bet I made at the start that a 1-seed would make the final at even money. So let's throw some of that money at the final.
UNC has the superior athletes.
Gonzaga has the superior fundamentally sound team.
UNC lost it last year in a heartbreaker. Believe they will be more focused this time around. They shut down Kentucky's Monk, held to 12 pts, after he torched them for 40+ in the regular season. They should focus on Williams-Goss and Karnowski. Limit those two and the game tilts in UNC's favor.
Karnowski Under 17.5 pts/rebs 3 units
UNC margin of victory; 6-10 pts at 7/2 0.5 units
11-15 pts at 17/2 0.5 units
16-20 pts at 15/1 0.5 units
Let us hope the ref's do not decide this game!! My biggest fear.

Scal, relax bud. I get your angle in this one; the obvious one in UNC's redemption from last year. Weve heard about it all year. Im one of the biggest UNC fans out there. Michigan and UNC have always been my teams brotha but with UNC, they have a big test tonite.
What has Gonzaga overcome? What have they not overcome that is so less valuable than what UNC has? Every team goes through things, some year to year, some for a decade or more. In my OPINION, they've been told for years they weren't good enough, they've been told a mid major will never win and most of all they've listened to the CRAP of them having a soft schedule. Whether true or not, who cares. They have beaten the teams in front of them and that's all they can do .The thing that matters is that they've gotten here when nobody thought they would and what a chance to showcase their worth against a team thats expected to be here and should have won last year. I understand over the years, these are different players but what's special about Gonzaga is that young men decided to attend there to bring the state of Washington their first title ever. It's never happened before either and it's going to be fun to see how they deal with that tonite. I'm rooting for UNC but I would love to see coach Few get that title. UNC HAS beaten Oregon who beat the unbeatable back court of Kansas and they beat the UCLA Balls. People will look at the zags and say they barely got in here and beat average teams. What has Gonzaga overcome? Years of being told they couldn't. It's that simple. I'm not gonna go back and forth with ya scal cuz i respect you but if your angle to this game is purely redemption, zags backers can point to years of that and say it carries the same weight as a team who handed a title away last year. I can't think of a better game than what we have tonite brotha. Do I bet with my heart or do I sit back and take everything into account. Tough game to cap.

I've got Gonzaga futures +700 bet so I'm going to have to root against you on this one man. I have to say though I'm not feeling too confident on this one.

Nice write-up. The unfortunate part about your theory is that while Gonzaga feels this way in spirit, the redemption angle is much stronger in that it happened exactly one year ago and can be corrected.
I just see this Zags team as very good, but not National Championship good. Being square and taking the team with the best pedigree is a tough pill to swallow given all we know about sharp capping. But you have to do it sometimes. This is one of them.
Jason, I think you are in trouble.

You might as well donate your money to charity cuz you're just wasting it. All zag haters say the same crap, they haven't played anyone. Which isn't entirely true, see zona, Florida, st Mary's and everyone in their region. Does the wcc blow? Oh ya. But you gotta remember they did exactly what a #1 team should do, they beat the crap outta everyone in the wcc. If they played in the PAC they would've won the PAC. Might not be undefeated but they would've won it this year. It's not too late to change your side nc backers cuz right now you're betting on the unc brand when in reality they're a good team but not great. Zags are great. And if I hear anything else about Justin Jackson Ima puke. That goofy looking mother effer is not that good. Ya he's their best player but quit talking about him like he can't be stopped. He's a late 1st round pick, big whoop. He's a tall small forward, congratulations. Zags will neutralize him just like thornwell. It's not too late. If you bet unc you're gonna have a bad time. Zags are the play, easy money.

Notice how you didn't have to post a 3 page essay to make your main point. It is just an experienced handicappers gut feeling that this is the right spot.
We will cash, and you will improve your record

There is nothing square about this game tonite and there is nothing square in picking either team. These are the two best teams in the country. There are matchups that favor both teams and if I recall, I don't remember making a play on this game yet, did I? This is one game and as seen last year, anything goes brotha. The great thing about this is that sometimes the better team doesn't always win. We saw this in the women's game with uconn "the unbeatable". Not sure who Jason is....but enjoy the game scal. I'm not going to rebuttle ya anymore in that we are both entitled to our opinions. We may in fact have the same in this game when it's all said in done but your stance on the angles is purely opinion. That's all I'm staying bud. For the zags, they have their motivation as does UNC. Let's see who has the better game. I hope the Tarheels win though in that that's my squad.

Firesox, thanks for making your presence felt with your indirect poke at those in here who like to do writeups. As for experienced cappers, do you qualify? Never heard of ya but hey, it's that time when all the "experts" chime in with their two cents. Scal, I respect. You.....it's hilarious how you are so sure. I'm gonna call both teams and just tell them not to play tonite because a guy named firesox said it's money in the bank. Where can I get that crystal ball bud?

As for degenerate, I disagree. Jackson is a very good player. A top 10 player in the draft. UNC is very good and even though I agree with your assessment on the zags, I can't say any side is easy money. Let's see how it unfolds tonite but any money bet tonite will be a tough win

For the record I am one of the biggest Scalabrine fans on this site but I am on the other side here. I expected a much hungrier NC team in this year's tournament after last year's heartbreaker vs Nova. It bothered me a little that NC stuggled a bit with Oregon's bigs in the 2nd half of that game. I am also troubled by their inability to shoot free throws late. I am going with the team that appears to be the hungerier one; gimme the Zags for the W!!
Scal....Love the writeups in all of the sports. I still think you are the best, man! Good luck!

Slipper.....great info. I'd rather take into account data and the product we see on the floor than a pure angle about redemption. I wrote about that angle before BUT against the zags, a team with a ton of motivation themselves, motivation thay runs for years with this program, the angles cancel themselves out in my opinion. I'm concerned as a Tarheels fan in that the zags are no joke. They are the most efficient team in America. They have size at both guard spots and they have some athletic front line players. The big boy isn't ultra athletic but he may keep Meeks off the glass just enough for the zags to control the board game. I look at this game and in my eyes, it will come down to the UNC gourds and how well they can play defense on the zags guards. Of UNC can D up those guards, I think they win. Free throws, turnovers and fouls will decide this game, not redemption from last year. Gotta execute.

Outside of NWG what guards do the zags really have? Mathews? He cant create his own shot, and is effected by length. Perkins? sure he can hit some open shots but cant create either. Melson? same story. I'm very unbiased in this game as I truly have no dog in the fight but I really think UNC is the better team. Gonzaga is a great team but I think they'll come up short and I wouldn't be surprised if the heels ran away with this late in the 2H.
Don’t let the last play affect the next play

Di we really need to cap this based on who has the biggest motivation angle? Cmon....it's the national championship. They all want to win it just as much as the other guy. Last year and the last 30 years doesn't change anything. One thing I do know is, Roy Williams is gonna be just as bad as he always is. I think that's a huge factor.
Zags +2 large for this Tarheel fan! ;)
