Coach understood his qb could not compete against competition of this caliber. Saw it early and often, saw it weeks ago against Ohio st. They were outmatched. Coach didn’t want to give ND the ball back for another time wasting, possible TD, drive.
I think he knew it was over, and was thinking of a way to cover. Or at the very least put a TD on the board to save face.

they got the onside kick and scored again late, so even though they almost covered, Indiana never had a chance.
Looking back, Indiana coach may have known what he was doing. Didn’t want to get blown out, but wanted to keep it competitive, if possible. Which he did in the end
