There was a study done on how gambling effects the brain in addicted gamblers vs non addicted gamblers. The addicted gamblers showed the same high in the brain when they won and lost vs the non addicted gamblers had no high when they lost.
If you are an addicted gamblers eventhough you always want to win you get the same buzz when you lose as if you won. That's very scary and that's why it's hard for addicted gamblers to stop.
It effects the brain the same way that heroin affects drug addicts beware!!!!

Gambling plays on our basest instincts as human beings. That's the first thing you have to realize. You have to understand all the ways it affects you and manipulates your thought process in order to be able to defeat the addiction. You are caught in a power-struggle with yourself, and in order to defeat the self you want to defeat you have to understand how you are being manipulated by your self. Some of the most powerful forces/thoughts/emotions known to humankind are working from within you to destroy you. Here are some that I uncovered on my way to recovery. May they help you in yours.
1) Hope. Hope is a powerful phenomenon in our lives. Whereas most people have long term hopes, and a few short term ones, the gambler experiences hope and despair on a daily basis. Every loss produces hope, hope of future victory; hope of future redemption or perhaps even salvation. In fact, your addiction to hope and the experience of hoping is far greater than any short lived victory, which is why winning never satisfies, or doesn't satisfy nearly as much as losing does. Gambling, like religion, is founded on hope, which explains its power. The gambler's motto might as well be, "there is always tomorrow." But this tomorrow that promises to wash away all your pain, redeem the past and all your past failures (including those not related to gambling), and make you a new man, is only a chimera your mind has concocted to keep hope alive.
2) Tied to your addiction to hope is your addiction to success and failure, victory and defeat. Whereas most humans only experience victory and defeat a few times in their lives (getting the dream job, getting married, having a child, losing a loved one, losing your job etc...), the gambler gets to experience the adrenaline rush of winning and losing on a daily basis. While most people live vicariously through the victories and defeats of movie characters, action-heroes and sports teams, you live it through your addiction on a daily basis.
3) Revenge is one of the most powerful human forces/emotions around. And the gambler gets to experience that in spades as well. Every loss occasions the possibility of sweet revenge. Revenge against those imaginary villains that have caused you pain, harmed you financially, and affected your relationship with your loved ones: your bookie, the team, the ref or the player that keeps screwing you, and even those naysayers (friends and family) who want you to stop and/or lose so much that you'll have to stop.
I hope these words help you find your way out of the hell you find yourself in.
Best,
BB

Stop gambling bud, its an awful addiction, ive lost thousands betting on sports. video games, poker, etc. The reason i kept going is because i thought this is the game, this is the game im going to win it back but sometimes you dont win, you keep losing, you lose a whole bunch of money (like you already have & so have I) and you cant pay it back, I started gambling when i was 18 on video games with my buddy and lost 3k, almost cost me my life because i couldnt pay him back in the time he wanted it. Its fun when you win, its the worst when you lose like me and you have. Just stop gambling my man, BOL to you.

Thanks for the thread. Anyone reading this thread can see that you guys are talking about us and we have all been there before. Only we can stop ourselves and sux how we must hit rock bottom to realize it.
To quit is to eliminate all the stimulus that will trigger your impulses. I can't even stand listening to sports news or even scores updates when i was trying to quit. To quit sport gambling is to give up sports altogether. Disconnect yourself from it and you will know that you have healed is when you can watch a game and enjoy it without having a wager on it. Even free fantasy football is bad because it causes you to do research and with that leads to an advantage angle and there goes your sobriety out the door. Don't even thinking about playing that 1% of your bankroll style. All if these stimulus will remind you of your old ways and back to square one you go.
To quit is to live a world without sports. Ask me who is going to the playoff n i will say i dont know and don't care.
At least now i have the control. New season and new bankroll that i can afford to lose and to keep it healthy so when im out, im back to hermit mode where u don't care who's going to the ncaab bowls.
The important thing is to keep it healthy.

Your decision to post this thread shows you have 50% of the skills it takes to get straight. The other 50% comprises solely on your ability to simply realize the balance between happiness and sadness is a simple matter of decision making. You know in your heart every time you bet more than you can afford to lose that it is a bad decision. Going to meetings will only surround yourself with people who have the same problem- never made sense to me. You need to surround yourself with healthy people who don't bet and care about you. It's only then that you can realize that you don't need this in your life to reach all of your goals.
I sent you a PM. I had to create a new account because I haven't logged into covers for years.

A 27 year old making that cash? Owning what kind of business? How does someone who own a business get a 50K check from work, piss it all away and still have a business?
You change jobs with me, I make 30K after taxes in a civil servant job, that way you can gamble less and not whine like a box about it.
If you had enough sense to either start or continue to operate your own business then blow it all on gambling WTF do you want from these people? Now you complain because you bang girls every night?
This is a joke right?
