Johnson during spring practice
Sitting right behind Brad Wornick on the depth chart after spring practice was freshman Rio Johnson. Johnson commited to the Pirates under Skip Holtz during the 2008 recruiting year and was reshirted during his first season in Greenville. After he chose the Pirates early in the recruiting process that year, bigger schools like Georgia and other SEC powers started calling the quarterback after he began to be noticed around the country. However, Johnson chose to stay loyal to the Pirates and refused to talk to these other schools as they continued to call.
Johnson is more of a pocket passer than the other quarterbacks on the roster and has a cannon for an arm. There is no doubt he has tremendous talent, but the only question with him becoming the next Pirate starting quarterback is: Can he grasp the offense in time? He showed flashes of brilliance during spring ball, but could never be consistent. Consistency is one of the main words Lincoln Riley used when he was describing what his quarterback needed to be in this specific offense.
Riley was impressed by Rio's talent and maturity as just a freshman and he looks to be a legitimate candidate to be the starting quarterback on September 5th. If not this season, then Johnson has potential down the road to be the future of the offense if he can get his cannon arm to be more accurate and consistent.
