I beleive that USC and Tulane might very well hit the OVER by themselves! As bad as I have been lately I don't expect many to agree, but I feel that this weekend is "mine".

pidi-- tough week last week for me also, but my friend your opinion is just as highly valued now as it has always been. on usc over yesterday. had an idea about smu, but was not sure.after reading your selection and seeing some very good people supporting that also, i jumped on board quickly. think usc covers the spread also especially if the total goes over.bol

A suprising 3-1 Red Wolves team takes their act into Memphis for a matchup against the 1-3 Tigers. The Red Wolves look to make it three straight against the Tigers after winning 35-31 last year.
Offensively Arky State has been on fire through their first 4 averaging 39 points per game. The running game has been their catalyst as they are racking up 259 yards per game on the ground and an equally impressive 6.6 yards per carry. They have not been sluggish through the air either as they are posting 234 yards per game with the air attack as well. Led by QB Corey Leonard and RBs Reggie Arnold and Derek Lawson the Red Wolves have produced 493 yards per game of offense. Leonard has 250 yards rushing, 937 yards passing and 10 TDs against a lone interception. Arnold and Lawson have combined for 741 yards rushing and 5 TDs. The Red Wolves defense has been stoudt as well as they are giving up only 16 points per game on 305 yards of offense allowed per game. They are allowing only 3 yards per carry on the ground. More impressiv however is the fact that they have created 12 turnovers and have registered 11 sacks in the 4 games so far this year.
The Tigers are also impressive offensively despite their 1-3 record. they are averaging 26 points per game and generate 472 yards per game of offense. QB Arkelon Hall has tossed the ball for 1,069 yards in only 4 games, but, he has only 4 TD tosses against 3 interceptions. The Tigers also have a tandem attack in the backfield with RBs Charlie Jones and Curtis Steele accounting for 435 yards rushing and 4 TDs. Defensively is where the Tigers have their problems. They are allowing 359 yards of offense per game. Those 359 yards are generating 28 points per game for the opponent. They have allowed 11 TDs defensively this year and the bad news is that 7 of those TDs have come on the ground.
The Arky running game is their main weapon and the Memphis defense has struggled mightily against the run this year and that my friends does not bode well for Tiger fans. I have no doubt that the Tigers will be able to put points on the board offensively, but I just don't see them keeping Arky State off of the scoreboard long enough to pull one out.

Huge win for NC State in OT last weekend against ECU. Lackluster performance for USF last weekend against Fla International.
The huge win for NC State however came with a huge price tag as they lost their starting QB and their top defensive player for this weeks matchup. That combined with the emotional "come down" after the ECU game is not a good thing for the Wolfpack.
When I think about USF I think about two things, one, Matt Grothe, and two, Defense. Matt Grothe, as I have said since last year, is a fierce competitior. The kid flat out hates to lose and actually refuses to lose! He not only has passed for 916 yards and 7 TDs this year, but he has only 2 interceptions and with his scrambling and running ability has posted 151 yards on the ground. His main man is Taurus Johnson and he has come through thus far with 16 receptions for 231 yards (14.4 yards per catch) and 2 TDs. Defensively the Bulls are so fast and atheletic that it sometimes is scary. They allow only 238 yards per game and incredibly allow only 67 of those yards on the ground! Two players come to mind first when talking about that Bulls D. George Selie who is an absolute beast and Tyrone McKenzie who has both the attitude and the speed.
NC State, will be using it's 3rd starting QB in this early campaign. Harrison Beck will get the start and he has been anything but impressive as he has tossed for 353 yards but has also thrown 3 interceptions against 2 TDs. With the situation at QB the Wolfpack are going to have to rely on the legs of RB Andre Brown. He has gained 281 yards this year and is averaging 16 carries a game. the problem for NC State here is that while Brown had a very nice game last week against ECU (12 carriers/73 yards/1 TD) he does not posses the explosiveness or power to match this USF run defense. That, in my opinion, leaves it in the hands of Beck, who has shown that he can cough the ball up. It doesn't get any better defensively for the Wolfpack as they have allowed 28 points per game thus far. Last week against ECU the Wolfpack defense gave up 383 yards of offense though they did create 2 turnovers with the biggest one coming when ECU QB Pinkney fumbled in OT. The biggest problem for the Wolfpack defense this week will be that they will be without the services of Nathaniel Irving who is their team leader with 33 tackles and 3 interceptions.
So, what I see is a NC State team that comes off of an emotional overtime win against a rival facing a Top 20 ranked and undefeated USF team coming off of a lackluster performance. To make matters worse for NC State they are going to face a Top 20 team without their top Offensive and defensive players on the field. I don't think that they can overcome the "emotional" let down after last week, the loss of their QB, and the loss of their Defensive leader all at the same time. Also, I beleive that USF got a verbal beat down by Coach Leavitt this week and will come in angry and thirsty for a big win.

scottyb74 - They (USC) flat out were not on the same emotional level as the Beavers and they got pasted in that first half! That midget running back from OSU was freaking awesome. Remiinded me a little of Wilbert M hiding behind those big lineman! PHILLIES win 2 out of 3, Mets win 3 out of 3, then the PHILLIES smack the Mets at the Balpark in a 1 game do or die!
