2016 record: 13-5
I am taking:
OHIO +108 over KANSAS
Reasons:
1. The season win total for Kansas
This line opened at Over/Under 1.5 wins.
Are you telling me Vegas is going to be paying out this total in Week 2 at 2:30 PM PST?
That will be the worst team total O/U of all time.
And the public loves overs so you know there is exposure on the overs. Not much exposure, but exposure nonetheless.
Just on principle in the way Vegas sets its lines and how this one will go up in flames in week 2, I'm compelled to bet against Kansas.
2. Frank Solich
What do you need when you bet on an awful team like Ohio? Pride and discipline, and history.
Ohio has none of that.
But Frank Solich, ex-HC of the Cornhuskers, does. And he just lost to what might be the worst FBS team in the nation. That game will leave a stick in his craw won't it.
But you know what will be even worse? Losing to Kansas after a loss like that.
Kansas is not the worst FBS team in the nation (obviously after a 1-0 start) but based on how bad they were last year, they are perceived as such.
So a team like Texas State just exists in the FBS but no one knows who or what they are. They can surprise you. Kansas is THE terrible team because they come from a major division and mock it with their existence, at least in recent years. You know what they are and if you lose to them? Forget it.
So it is a big plus that Ohio gets Kansas the week after what is among the worst losses in Ohio CFB history.
Ohio not a storied program but I cannot see Solich, a team he lead to an 8-5 record last year, laying down here. He has the history. He has the discipline. He has the pride. And he can infuse it in his team after a loss like last week to save face. Lose this and the season is over in Week 2.
Kansas has none of this.
This is the same concept we used to bet Kobe and the Lakers over the Jazz in the final game of the NBA season. It works.
3. Kansas fans rushing the field
For the first time in history, fans of an FBS team stormed the field after beating ....an FCS team.
I'm serious. You can look that up. The stadium announcer had to tell the fans to 'respect the program and get back in the stands' after seeing it.
Do we make a bet on fans rushing the field?
No. But symbolically, it shows you what Kansas is.
And what is Kansas? A team that hadn't won a game in around 600 days.
And who did they beat? An FCS team that went 1-10 last year. Really Rhode Island might be the single worst FCS team out there to lose to Kansas (and Kansas was giving them around 5 TD's too so the level of their play is unfathomable). That wasn't a win of any substance whatsoever.
Listen, Ohio is a bad team but they can make things happen. They have a senior QB who threw for 400+ last week. That is life. That is points. That is a chance. But we have Solich and the classic "Emotional win fade" angle against Kansas as well as that really was an emotional win for that program. And Ohio has the bounceback spot.
It seems square but I am playing it.
Bonus:
If CM Punk wins his UFC fight tonight, I'll never bet another UFC fight again.
I capped Micky Gall up and down, along with Punk who is an unknown and I don't see any way Punk wins.
He has NO FIGHTING BACKGROUND whatsoever, and had SPINAL surgery before this fight when he should have been training. This Gall kid, although he appears to be a dork of sorts, can fight. He has a good ground game is long and wiry and has one punch knock-out power. Punk will put up a small fight and tire out to a UFC fighter who has been training for 7 years. Punk has been training for all of 1.5 years and most of that was on the DL.
Plus the UFC has Punk signed to a multi-fight deal. I expect they did that because they want him to take his lumps first and then get a nice win later down the road.
If you want to parlaying $100 on the Ohio ML with Micky Gall -465 will yield $152.73. Not bad.
