How often do you hear the talking heads saying, "Well since Team A didn't beat Team B convincingly, I can't put them ahead of Team C that beat Team B convincingly."

That's where the AP poll come in comprising of sportswriters from across the country. Then there's the coaches poll, which many of them don't get to see as much games as the fans do and often vote according to statistics. Of course, last is the computer poll which ranks teams down to the thousandth of a percent. Every little point helps the winning team's cause, esp. the top tier teams in the country.
This is not the first nor will it be the last that we'll see teams running up the score. That's just a fact.
Don't forget we're talking about a guy with individual motives too. Trying to go out as the Heisman winner along w/#1 pick, a/la Cam Newton last year, so gotta pad the stats.
I thought it was pretty classless myself. Game is over. Run the ball, run out the clock, kick a field goal if you have to. You really think the 4 point difference in points vs. a terrible UCLA team is going to make a difference in the BCS?
