True FR Goff has won the spot over RS FR Zach Kline. Not that surprised at this move by Dykes, despite him holding out as long as possible in the hope that Kline could win the competition.
Goff surprised in the Spring by catching onto the offense the quickest. Goff is taller than Kline, but not as compact. Kline has the bigger arm and is a true dual threat type, but has struggled with accuracy and touch in camp. Dykes has talked about him being a high energy guy and natural leader, but needs to do a better job of playing within himself. I wouldn't be shocked to see Kline start or be worked-in at some point this season though.

Tough spot for a true freshman QB especially with so many new faces on the offensive line. The Bears have some pretty good receivers and that will help if the kid has time to throw. Getting in early turned out to be beneficial for both Goff and the team.
The schedule and poor defense will hit his team hard...regardless of who plays quarterback.

agreed horse, too many new player and coaching personnel to sort through for Cal to be effective in the 1H of the season or so, but they should start getting things going in the 2H of year and i'll look for value spots from them then. their defense is a big concern overall.

how bad/good was maynard last year?... i'm completely biased (turner gill fan) but i thought he was decent last year. and allen was a great WR........
a buffalo fan asked this in another thread where i responded in much further detail. to keep it simple though, maynard was a disaster. horrible reads, decision making, and mechanics.. very painful to watch. allen was pretty solid, but had some personnel/attitude issues. Cal is much better off with Maynard and Tedford gone, it's just going to take some time.

LH - there's always a chance of course, but northwestern has made the grade for me at their current price. and i generally look to avoid favorites, especially on the road. but whether it was Goff or Kline for Cal, neither has taken a snap in college prior. personally, i think Kline has the bigger upside (and i think Dykes thinks so too). Cal does have a good back though who can rip-off nice chunks, but Cal's QB situation will allow NW to key on him a bit more.
whereas NW has a proven balanced offense and are extremely well coached. love the dykes hire for Cal and i look for this team to be dangerous in the 2H of the year, but this is too early for them to take on such competition (it's just a bad 'spot' for Cal imo). and their defense is going to be a problem regardless. not in love with NW's defense, but Cal's will steadily get worn down by that potent multi-faceted NW running attack which chews clock and mentally deflates a young defense.
i'm not as concerned about the trip west for NW as others, but do understand the concern in general, especially with NW's rather weak ATS road record. but it's week 1, they have a very iffy 'Cuse team at home in week 2, and will apparently travel out to berkeley early to get acclimated since it's a night game. gl

thorpe that's certainly possible, but i'd have to think that Dykes has already had some serious conversations with him and his folks about this decision. under no circumstance would Dykes want to lose this native East Bay kid.

I really like NW -6 here, That Cal offense is going to awful. Losing Keenan Allen and Their top two rushers from last season. This team only averaged 23PPG last season. Starting a frosh QB with a new coach on opening day is not reassuring. Northwestern will have a very stout defensive group back with 7 returning starters who only game up 22.5PPG last year. I think the dual threat attack of Colter and Siemain will be tough to prepare for week one. The Northwestern Offense put about 400 yard a game. (31.7PPG) The only question about Northwestern is they are replacing 3 O-linemen. BOL to everyone I will be on Northwestern week one.

I think NW this season is a BCS Conference version of Boise St. Overachieving, well coached, and cohesive. Some are talking about NW challenging Oh St this season. I know there is a 2 hour Time Diference, but something tells me Fitz will have them prepared and ready to execute. Cal has talent, but I just don't believe they will be functioning at a high level in week 1.

Could not agree more. Fitz is one of the phenomenal coach. He will be at a big time program in the near future,

Cal has a new QB plus losing other good skill players , they are changing the defensive scheme as well. Northwestern is still solid , I don't understand why so many are on Cal , Colter is a stud for Northwestern and I just see Cal stumbling in first game and Northwestern winning by double digits in this game
