Interesting match up here... OU is giving up 20.5 points. How do you guys see it playing out? IMO, Tennessee beat up on a young Utah St team while Chukie Keeton was rusty and out of rhythm with receivers ( as he was again in week 2 only completing 50 percent of passes for like 160 yards I believe, against a bad school). Then the Vols beat a sunbelt team, albeit Arky St is not to shabby, in the confines of Neyland Stadium... Two easy home victorys IMO. The verdict is still out on OU having only played La Tech and Tulsa.. we all saw what they did at the end of last year beating Okie st. & Bama in the bowl game. Trevor Knight seems to have come into his own as a legitimate duel threat. Defense seems to be stout. I would lean OU here, one thing that does scare me is Vols coach Butch Jones, now in his second year with a track record of getting programs on track. Thoughts welcome....

I just dont like betting against SEC doggs out of conference. This looks like a beatdown, but Vols are getting a lot of points. This game is on TV here in CAL, so OU now looks like a square bet.

Tennessee is a talented but extremely young bunch. After the difficult years of Kiffin and Dooley, Butch Jones is doing a fantastic job and has built a great deal of positive momentum for the program. The Vols are on the upswing and will be a force beginning next year when some of these young guys grow up and another solid recruiting class comes in. They have outstanding skill position players-especially on the edge as M. North is a stud receiver with a big body and Pig Howard can hurt you in a # of ways. Malone & Smith are gonna be good ones too, but they will miss the juco newcomer Pearson this week with a high ankle sprain and that will hurt as he is a gamebreaker and a legit threat-starting TE looks to be out also. Worley has shown tremendous improvement at the QB position as well. Big concern with Tenn. offense is the o-line. They haven't been able to get any push & run the ball with any consistency against Utah St or Ark St and that does not bode well going to Norman. They will have to rely on the quick passing game to generate any offense and will have trouble mounting long drives and keeping the ball away from the OU offense without a ground game. This really concerns me this week and going forward into a very difficult stretch of schedule-(@ OU, @ Georgia, Florida, Chattanooga, @ Ole Miss, Bama, @ South Carolina-that is ridiculous!) being one-dimensional against these defenses is a death sentence. Simply put, the Vols are vastly improved offensively, but still have some big ? and this will be a different type of test from what they have faced so far this year.
On the defensive side of the ball Tennessee has shown tremendous improvement from the last couple of years(I know they only had one way to go) as they have added a great deal of speed and athleticism in the secondary. Cam Sutton(Frosh AA last year) has been super impressive in coverage and tackling in space and moving Reeves-Maybin to LB has increased their speed & range. AJ Johnson is the team leader and looks to be playing at a different pace than everybody else on the field. Their d-line has been a pleasant surprise so far, but again OU is a different animal.
From an intangible standpoint, this Tenn team will NOT lay down and take a butt kicking without a fight, but they could be bringing a knife to a gun fight if OU is that good(I keep pointing out that UT hasn't been tested, but fact is that OU hasn't been tested yet either-how do they respond if the Vols hit them in the mouth first?). There is a tremendous amount of enthusiasm around the UT program right now and they will battle on Saturday for the full 60 minutes. I will go back and watch both OU games tonight to see exactly what Tn is up against so not sure about this number yet. Hard to gauge this young Vols squad against this competition, as I wouldn't be totally surprised if the game was close in the 4th quarter or if OU gets a lead and keeps scoring bc Tn can't run the ball or generate any pressure defensively with their front and the defense just gets worn out. More info to come...

Yes, one of their starting tackles is ofy torn acl. Also start a true Fr who was projected to play dt until about 6 weeks ago at one of the guard spots. The OU def front should have their way as this is Tn's weakest group. Vols will have to utilize quick passing game for ball control and do have a height advantage against the OU secondary.

Please, tell me which Big XII team is a noticeably better football team than UT.
Oklahoma, obviously.
Baylor, yes.
Kansas State? We'll beat them by 40 points next week.
Texas Tech? Arkansas will beat them by 4 TD.
The rest of the atrocious teams; Iowa State, Texas? God-awful, and don't deserve to be on a football field imo.
problem?
hey dickhead - these teams would beat the current Tenn team on a neutral field (and if you think the Texas team that beat North Texas 38 to 7 would lose to Tenn, then you are a moron...
Oklahoma
Baylor
Kansas State
Texas
TCU
Oklahoma State
West Virginia
Tennessee would defeat
Texas Tech
Kansas
Iowa State
Thus, I would rank Tenn 8th in the Big XII, if they were hypothetically in the Big XII conference...

Like Butch Jones as a coach but this smells like Tennessee at Oregon last year!!!
You could be right, but I wouldn't necessarily compare this team to last year's. Tons of new faces with lots of stars. They look much better defensively with a lot of added speed, depth, athleticism-problem now is youth and 1st trip to an environment like this against a team like Oklahoma for a bunch of these guys(21 Freshmen played in the opener vs Utah St). How will they react? No way to really know until Saturday night. They do have a lot more offensive firepower at the skill positions than they did a year ago and the secondary/Lb's are much better. Scary scenario for Tenn is OU overpowers them on both lines of scrimmage and has their way-certainly could happen with problems on Vol o-line and huge size/power advantage for Ou o-line vs smallish Tn defensive front. However, these Vols will show more fight than the bunch that went up to Oregon last year and are simply much more talented than last year's team. Couldn't argue against playing OU too vehemently here, but be careful equating last year's Tennessee to this year's Tennessee as they are much improved from a talent/commitment/stability standpoint.

It's fantastic to see a fan of a Team that actually has reasoning, sense, and unbiased. It's hard to come by here on this forum, so thank you.
I think you hit it pretty spot on. The biggest problem for Tennessee is they are taking a young team into a very hostile environment for a night game. 2/3 of Tennessee team that's traveling has never been on a road game yet. And the biggest problem for Tennessee is there young o line going into a loud place against a really good front 7. A lot of what OU does defensively on Saturday hasn't been shown on the field yet bc they have been very vanilla. I also don't know so much about Tennessee having a size advantage at WR....I guess you can say that about every team they play this year. But OU has a 6'2" corner, all the safeties are over 6' and Zack Sanchez (the best CB) is 5'11", so OU isn't small by any means. And on the other side of the ball OU OL against tenn DL looks like a big problem too....OU outweighs them by 50lbs here. If the noise gets to the offense for Tennessee and the OU run game gets going then it could be a bad night IMO. Tennessee is going to have to find a way to stop the run game and make Knight and their inexperienced WR's beat them.
This game just looks like a massive mismatch to me. I do agree that Tennessee won't quit, and that's why I would say if Tennessee covers then it's prob on a late score. I love what butch jones is doing here and I think next years game in Tennessee when this vols team 1 year more experience has a chance to be a really freaking good game.
As for the guy saying Tennessee would be the 2nd best team in the big 12....no they wouldn't. I'd say they could be between 3rd and 8th though, but that's a large margin. It's also bc I think the big 12 is fairly deep. And outside of Kansas and Iowa st, I think 3rd place is up for grabs behind ou and Baylor.

OU has just too much of an advantage at the OL and DL for me to even consider TENN here. I like Butch and think he's doing an awesome job. His recruiting has been awesome and he has great assistants. He will coach up that talent. As a UGA fan, that concerns me, not today, but in years to come.
Is there anything that Bob Stoops wants to do more than to embarrass an SEC team in his house? I don't think so. In the new era of P5, teams don't just have to win, they have to impress. I think this could be one of those situations.
Normally you would hope for a backdoor cover if you were on TENN here. I see the opposite. I see 4th quarter as a time where the lack of depth will really show up for Vols. I think they can keep it respectful until that lack of depth shows up and OU. In the end, I really expect Stoops to take no prisoners.

don't like OU but when they beat Alabama in the 2013 Sugar bowl that got my attention. Looking hard at giving TN the pts. and taking OK like I did last week with Tusla. I also think AR. is an overlay getting 2 or 3 pts. in lubbock. great write up whyisit and very informative thread.

When I was a fledgling gambler an old sage dropped this quote on me and I will never forget it, "Ain't no team I like more than my money son." If you can't be objective you have no chance in this game. People wonder how I am such a huge sports fan but don't really have any favorite teams(except maybe UT football and Nashville Predators), but it is simply a byproduct of gambling for most of my life. When I was a kid I had teams that I really liked and plenty that I couldn't stand as well, but don't look at sports in those terms any more really. I have different favorite teams every day as most of us do. I rarely play games involving Tennessee because sometimes it is difficult to check the emotion at the door no matter how hard you try, but I do know a bit about them and wanted to share. This site can be a great source of info if you know where to look and can read between the lines. Thanks for your input Hammer and good luck!

Pay attention..... this is the kind of thread we need more of in this forum.... agree or disagree with a poster's position, but don't just bash him... give us your thoughts, tell us why. and don't be so thin skinned that you can't respond intelligently to a rebuttal.

Vols fan here. The bet is OU or nothing. Vols without Pearson is big and starting TE may miss and he's a true frosh to give u an idea of the depth Worley is average and so is the run game. Oline is not very good right now and kicker/punter are both playing first road games and both haven't proven themselves to be reliable yet
Butch is awesome and they'll play tough and would die out there for him but outclassed big time in this one. I'm going to cheer on my vols but wouldn't bet on them unless it got to around 28 and I would question that

Liking Tennessee quite a bit here with the points. The Tennessee defense does seem pretty athletic and OU is not that great an offensive team based on last year's performance and the loss of some important players. I think going up against UT defense is going to be a big difference compared to what they have seen. And I think Tennessee will score 17 on OU at least. OU 31-Tenn 17
