Series History: Nevada leads series 13-8-2 (last meeting, 2008, 41-17 Nevada)
Scouting The Offense: The Spartans don’t have enough weapons on offense. They have to work so hard to put points on the board that it’s almost impossible to do so with any regularity. They have only scored 20 points twice—against defense-deficient Idaho and with a garbage touchdown against Fresno State. They’ve slipped to 117th in the nation in total offense and 115th in scoring offense. Quarterback Jordan La Secla is 88th in the nation in pass efficiency.
Scouting The Defense: The Spartans made some nice strides during their bye week, addressing their problem in run defense. They played their best run defense in at least a year against Boise State. However, the Broncos found all kinds of holes in the Spartans’ pass coverage. It’s not going to do much good to stop the run if it means leaving receivers open.
Quote To Note: “Their offense is a genuine nightmare to play against.”—San Jose State coach Dick Tomey on Nevada.
STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL
This Week ‘S GAME: Nevada at San Jose State, Nov. 8—Two teams going in opposite directions meet on national TV. Nevada has won five straight; San Jose State has lost six of seven, including all six of their FBS games.
Keys To The Game: The Spartans are going to need some kind of magic bullet on defense to shut down the Wolf Pack, who have scored at least 31 points in five straight games. There’s little chance the Spartans can score that many points.
