Houston comes into this game after losing to SMU and Temple and then blowing out Tulane last week.
Injury plagued Cougars lost their dynamic qb King for the season last week. In addition, they are without 2 defensive lineman and a safety also out for the season. Losses a #118 ranked D can ill afford to lose. Allegedly Ed Oliver is going to play today. But who knows with this dude. Is he a 100%? Will he go all out or not?
It's been said by several that Briles system is a "plug and play" system. I don't doubt that in the least. However, it's difficult to replace an elusive dual threat qb who put up 50 td's (36 passing, 14 rushing) and his experience in a big game. King could make big plays with his feet, was hard to sack and could really throw it on the riun. The dude was shifter than a snake. I've seen backup qb Tune play, looks like a fine prospect, has the size and big arm, probably going to have a good career. Still, no denying he is green and raw yet, and he does not have the quickness and speed that King possessed.
The Tiger offense has been humming lately. My view is that punishing tail back Darrell Henderson (8.7 ypr, #2 nationally, 17 td's, maybe the best rb in the country?) is going to do business against the soft run D of Houston (give up 180 ypg). Brady White(2738 yds, 24 td's) should have a big day against the very bottom ranked pass D in the country. The Cougar defense is #118 in Total Defense giving up 480 ypg.
Had King not been injured this game would have probably been more of a toss-up. Both defenses give up lots of yards and points. Both have explosive offenses. No denying Houston was averaging 49 ppg. But Memphis has the better Defense between theses two teams.
The injury plagued Cougars now have to go on the road in this showdown with a young inexperienced qb. Memphis has won 5 of last 6 at home, the only loss to UCF in a game they could have won. The Cougars have been hit and miss at times with their intensity and focus. If they don"t come ready to play from the start Memphis is capable of a blowout.
