This is a great article written by heart surgeon Dr. Dwight Lundell, M.D.

He says that " The injury and inflammation in our blood vessels is caused by the low fat diet recommended for years by mainstream medicine.   What are the biggest culprits of chronic inflammation? Quite simply, they are the overload of simple, highly processed carbohydrates (sugar, flour and all the products made from them) and the excess consumption of omega-6 vegetable oils like soybean, corn and sunflower "

did you see the article that came out yesterday about eating red meat (i think it said daily) increases the risk of early death?  i was going to post it.

wait, here it is.    what do you think?

i also heard there was a study that said posting daily hockey picks increases your insulin levels which is why you don't do it anymore.  any truth to that one?

Some good, interesting stuff there. Many of those exact sentiments are conveyed in The Primal Blueprint. Haven't quite finished it yet, as I've been beyond busy, but its well worth a read.

    wowza, good read

just wanted to thank you two again for turning me onto this information. Sat down to a family dinner on Sunday, and three of us(them) were vegetarians for over a decade,,,,,,,everyone was eating meat

cutting bad carbs from my diet has done unimaginable wonders to my health. Added bonus, my 20/20 vision is back. Oh, and feeling like a million bucks is neat-o too

I've been on a red meat and dippy eggs kick for the last two weeks. I feel like i've been neglecting bacon though. i could eat a half a pound right now

Like BLT's? I know, bread sucks. Easy solution, 'butterfly' cut a chicken breast, and use it as bread

i cooked some mushrooms in with my bacon, and went HEAVY on the mayo, doctored up the chicken a bit. added some red onions for some crispy crunch. Shared one with my fatboy friend and he was blown away. my mouth is watering all the way just thinking about food. When i first cut carbs, even 30 days in, i was struggling to find things to eat that fit the bill. six months later, i have an arsenal of recipes, and as a foodie, i've never eaten better

Here   is where I got some of the numbers from this study.

The study is complete garbage. First of all it was done by Harvard who has been the spokespersons for anything related to obesity in the past 50 years in America. They wanted to and have made a name for themselves and have ignored all of the work regarding the alternative hypothesis to obesity which was going on in Europe in the 1950's. In the book Good Calories Bad Calories,  Gary Taubes mentioned that these guys had the work of Hugo Rony and others who pointed to carbohydrates as the cause of chronic disease but ignored it and came up with the "eat less, move more" theory which obviously has not done anything for us. By the end of the 1970's they also determined what researchers and clinicians in the field would eventually believe in America and have preached it ever since.

Looking at the numbers, the study followed the diets of more than 121,000 middle aged women and men for up to 28 years. Each additional serving of red meat that a person consumed per day was linked with a 13% increased risk of dying during the study. Salami, bacon and hot dogs which fall under processed meats were determined to be more dangerous with a 20% higher risk of dying with each additional serving. They estimated that substituting one daily serving of red meat with low fat dairy, whole grains, nuts legumes, fish and poultry, would reduce the risk at this stage of life by 7-19%. If all participants had reduced their red meat intake to less than half a serving a day, the researchers state that 8% of deaths among women and 9% among men could have been prevented.

Here is why the above is almost meaningless. We are dealing with 120,000 people to start,  are told that 20% of people died during the study but the causes of death are not mentioned. If they were to tell us the causes of death it would be prevalent that red meat was not the cause.  Anyway, so 24,000 out of the 120,000 died during the study. We are talking about risk here and not actual death. Out of the 24,000 if 9% of these people consumed less red meat then maybe they could have lived longer. So we have about 2100 out of 120,000 which is less than 2%. If consuming red meat is that bad then why only 2100 of this whole group of 120,000. If 1 out of every 5 people is unhealthy and overweight then surely it should have been more if red meat was the culprit. I would like to know what else these people were eating during this time. The study also claims that eating meat raises cholesterol. It does but not in an unhealthy manner. Red meat raises your HDL and lowers your tri-glycerides and VLDL.

We don't believe that people sitting on the couch all day smoking and drinking and eating chips are just as healthy as someone who does not smoke and consumes moderates amounts of alcohol, just because they decided not to consume red meat. They study only mentioned the people who died without revealing the causes of death which is an important piece of information to exclude. My guess is that what was not mentioned was that the people who consumed more red meat were also the ones who made bad lifestyle choices such as drinking, smoking, being over-weight, high carbohydrate consumption, high sugar consumption ,no physical activity, etc. Correlation does not mean causation. This study is based on bad science and should be ignored.

Club--- Been busy the past few weeks so I haven't been able to put as much time as I would like into capping. I have more time now though so I should be making plays almost everyday. Looking forward to an exciting playoff race in both conferences.

"The China Study" by T. Colin Campbell is the most comprehensive study.  Or, if you're not a book reader, see the movie "Forks Over Knives".  (Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn is "the man".)Also, click below for a great documentary by Sanjay Gupta.  Meat, Dairy, and High Fructose Corn Syrup, lead to chronic disease.  It's a personal topic, judge for yourself, best of luck.

I would like to know what else these people were eating during this time.

that's often the million dollar question with these studies.  i'm sure it's hard to control the group when we're dealing with diets and what people report their diets to be.

but i do think people can conduct the experiment themselves with an elimination diet. it may not tell a person if he will die earlier but it will tell a person what foods make him feel better or worse which seems to be a good indication of a food group's impact on one's health.

Yes this is important. Best way is to tweak your own diet and get a first hand experience on how your body responds to different foods, with or without them.

The best diet to follow is the Blood Type Diet. It's much more scientific with years of research. Thankfully im a Type O and can enjoy red meat(organic).

Just more than 70% of the men were overweight or obese

This doesn't mention what else these guys ate. Along with the fat, I sure there were other unhealthy things that they consumed, as a large majority of them were overweight. I try and include a lot of omega-3 in my diet, which they claim is linked to a higher sperm count. From what I've read, you want to have a fairly even ratio of omega-3 to 6.

    Butter is basically milk fat.

And ain't nothing wrong with milk or fat.

    What people don't realize is............

When eat butter, most people usually don't eat that much.

Be shocked if anybody could even eat half a stick of butter.

cd329, start reading a lot of these posts and articles, and preferably, the books recommended, particularly sharpaction, and you will see what we're saying about meat, eggs, cholesterol, carbs, etc.  the short answer is the conventional wisdom is wrong.

squid, that seems to be the problem with most of these publicized studies.  they are not properly controlled.

    try to exercise daily
    eat a breakfast
    control portion sizes
    eat fruits and veggies
    avoid snacking

most people have a difficult doing the above, but if they even just did that i think they would see improvement in how their body feels mentally and physically along with maybe losing a few pounds
