Your opinion on reporting a bookie to the police

Plus whatever happened to "honor amongst Thieves" or the "gentleman's code"  Bookies offer a service to make money on sports gambling without going to vegas or betting on offshore books that takes months to get paid if you do at all.  Its the losers scumbugs like some on here that place bets that are way above their means expecting to make a quick buck.  When they lose they dont pay but when they win they expect their $$$ ASAP.  Its crazy, the bookies will actually pay because they want to keep the business then the next week get hosed.   I believe that if your going to wager on sports have the money to lose to pay up or dont be a loser and a scammer like some

Bottom Line is I never believe in being a Rat as long as this Book is Legit. but this guy is not connected cause if he was kickin a % upstairs, they would straighten him out 4 makin a Big Deal out of 1,100 & the kid didnt Rat. bottom Line is as a book u know ur goin 2 take losses like any business & I would b Happy as Hell 2 eat 1,100 if I was takin & some1 turnin into me took a Pinch & didnt Rat !  P.S., if he did come 2 ur place of work & u didnt Slap him 4 that then ur just as Big a Bitch as he is.!

Long story short, my nephew moved back with his mom (my sister) in another state, my bookie friend said I should be responsible to pay him back that $1100 because he doesn't want to chalk it up as a loss.  I said look, he know the situation, my nephew got arrested, you should be thankful he didn't rat you out.  So yesterday was the 2nd time this month, that bookie harassed me at my work.  He came into my office and made up lies and told all my co-workers I owe him money because I lost some ball games and refused to pay up.  Luckily my boss wasn't in the office.

Should I report this to the police?  Will my former friend who's a bookie be locked behind bars because he's running a major gambling ring?

Here's the thing where I come from if you take a hit and keep your mouth shut all debts are forgivin.  If this clown is crying about $1100 he is not as connected as he is making himself out to be.  Let's think about thild this  for a moment your nephew could have sang like a canary,  but he didn't not only should the debt be squashed he should have handed your nephew a nice envelope full of cash for not turning him in.  Getting police involved could backfire and land your nephew in some more hot water.

 

If he comes to your work or home again hit him with a bat, pipe whatever and straighten him out.  then as he is laying on your lawn beaten and battered,  then you call police and say you have an intruder bleeding on your front lawn.

  A lot of what you are saying is the truth and you have some valid points. I have been involved in betting at a lot of levels to include bettor, middle man and was part of what I would call a small paper local operation (myself and another guy). But one thing no one has bothered to mention is if the cop made a bet with your nephew he obviously knows there's a big man somewhere. Cops are not dummies, in fact, I live in a town of 60K and I bet the cops know every bookie in the area but the law is what protects a lot of bookies depending on what state you are in, etc. In this area a cop cannot do anything even if he sees you taking a bet unless someone comes to him or them, and makes a complaint. The next thing they look at is how big is the operation (thousands of dollars and again that amount varies from different locales) if the operation is over a certain amount it determines the penalty, misdemeanor, felony, etc. Another factor involved is whether it's the bookies' first charge. All this varies around the Country. The opeation you explained does not sound like a small operation but if it's his first time caught, he will just be fined a certain amount (amount determined by local ordinance and whether it's a fedeal crime or not). This is why I alway said if I get caught I'll pay the $500.00 fine for misdemeanor (cause we weren't doing enough action for it to be a federal nor were we crossing a state line) and I would retire with some skin left. In this area most bookies get beat out of money and they can do nothing because the cops will just close them down or bust them, so they take the loss and move on  and try to insure they get more reputable, paying customers. People are going to bet. That's a fact of life. A lot of locals have gone out of business because about half (at least) of the folks now bet offshore where they have more props, better odds, etc. What I think  you should have done (may be too late now if you  have gotten the cop involved) is to call your former friend (the book) and tell him if he harrasses you again, you will flatly turn him in and he probably would have backed off, if for no other reason at one time you were friends but IMO he's not using common sense either by making such a big deal out of $!3XX.xx. As big as you say he is that is a cigarette to him and he's being a DA for possibly costing him his entire opeation for that amount of money. I do think the MOB BS is mostly overrated except perhaps in large towns, Atlanta,  Chicago, etc. The man may know some folks in the MOB but doubt they work for him, etc. You are in a pretty piss poor situation right now regardless of waht happens and that is sad for that amount of money. If you could talk to him and it's not too late (depends on what cops knows and has done so far) my suggestion may work. If he persists and wants the money I would turn the cop loose, give him all the info you know but you are going to end up in court I guarantee you that as a witness cause you will satifsy the law requirement of being the complaintant. Without you testifying it will probably be thrown out or they'll try to get someone else to testify they may uncover when they bust him. Dawniewags is absolutely correct, if they'd legalize gambling it would solve our deficit in short time. People are going to gamble legal or illegal as long as people breathe. I wish you the best! If you have the option I say pay the $1100.00 and it will all disappear. You have already lost him as a friend for sure.

  And just where is your cop friend going to be when someone comes calling and puts a knot on your head. First thing that should have happened was to let the bookie know to close out the code for your nephew's bettors and this would not have been a problem at all. Sounds like a very loose type outfit/operation, no wonder everyone involved including you are having problems. As I said in another post, unless this is a federal crime or book has been busted several times before, he will pay a fine and never be in jail. If he goes to jail it will be for 1-3 years at the max and fined. Can't believe $1100.00 is causing all this mess. When I used to bet big I lost that in one day.

 

Running an illegal gambling operation is considered a felony.  The main bookie will definitely face jail time.

That is not necessarily the case, it all depends on the law where you are at> they have "action" amounts that determine that, if he is doing too much action based on the local laws and it's considered a felony, he still may not  have to go to jail if it's his first time convicted. He may only get 90 or 180 days along with a hefty fine even then. You are assuming too much IMO. I agree tho if it's a felony (first time may not be) he may serve some time but that is normally decided by a judge. What I'm trying to say is all bookies are not convicted of felonies and all bookies don't necessarily go to jail the first time, etc.

Just got done reading through this thread and things are adding up.

Guy claims a big time operation is harassing him for a measly $1000 dollar. Even the little bookies would just eat that and take it as a loss.

The OP then gladly sides with Law Enforcement and then continues to bash gangsters, like the posters here are gangsters. Saying gangster are their bitches any day. Who cares?

This just seem to me that this is a cop bashing a sports bookies that makes a ton more money than him, and gets away with it.

hey.. just a word of caution.. i know $1100 is not a big deal.. but turning a punk like this to the cops can backfire also.. If he's connected.. it could be the beginning of problems when he gets out if he knows you busted him..

I would warn him first of your intentions or try to work it out.. you are not responsible for another players marker.. I know if i was him.. i chalk it up to biz losses.. but there are some real idiots out there who have nothing to lose.. and you sound like a good guy..

chances are he would not face any jail time if its his first offense booking bets. as long as he isnt being violent or involved with weapons, drugs, etc, than he'd most likely get probation and avoid being locked up if he refrains from doing it again.
