Yes, I an OUTTA HERE in 12 Months.  I cannot stand a minute longer of this Corporate hypocrisy.  The pitting of Reps vs Dems, LIKE IT MAKES SOME KIND OF DIFFERENCE.

That is a cliche that isn't always true. The numbers are what they are. The middle class is bigger and makes more money.  CEOs wouldn't make the money if board wasn't willing to pay them. If they don't perform they are gone. And yes. With benefits at a union shop I know people making more than that in airplane manufacturing. I guess I just don't understand the whole Big Business animosity people have.  Most companies really try to provide a good service and compensate good workers.  The smaller companies I could argue the opposite sometimes and maybe that is why they stay small.

Well a little company in Australia you may heard of called McDonalds.

Also in the states Chili's has them at almost every single location. You can't order a full meal, but you can do side items, drinks and deserts. Also the kids can play games on them. 

Also Applebee's is testing the screens. 

As I said before Sheets on the East Coast and a couple of smaller outfits are starting to use them. 

We have had FF places around for 50 years and the ordering has not changed a bit.   Things change and automation happens.  When you have $15 dollar min wage jobs jammed down a rest. throat, then that automation happens even faster. 

You mentioned that even at the grocery stores you have someone overseeing the self checkout stations.  Well that's usually one person monitoring 5 or 6.  So you are using one employee instead of 5 or 6.  That's a nice savings. 

Touchscreens, coming to your town sooner than you think.

Stop... Pause... Think...

First... I totally believe there will always be (EXCEPT in totally automated facilities) a cashier that can take an order and help visually disabled and others who need assistance.

Second... There will be kiosks for those that want the option.



I don't want things to change... So, PERIOD... They will not change... Right...

Chili's and Applebees for sure are on a different class vs FF as you know..plus as you say they are used for more than just ordering. There is a fast casual place I went to several times when younger that had a phone you would call to place your order from the table..that is humorous.

FF adds wrinkles that fast casual does not, that is speed of service, and ticket count. The ticket count per 1000 dollars of revenue is dramatically higher for a place like McD's vs a place like Chili's (as you know). And the menu is diverse with many options of modifications. I will check that link about McD's but I would bet if they have any kind of volume (I dont know their sales and ticket count vs here) they wont make financial sense to keep going. 

To really make a kiosk system work in a FF environment you need 75% plus number of units to service relative to the greatest customer count during peak hours..if not you are losing the speed of service battle and in FF that is the MOST important matrix to any operator. So if your max queue for lunch rush is 30 people in line (probably higher) then you need 25 kiosks..and that is costly and takes up a ton of space versus the wait line they now have. 

Customers will leave and go somewhere else if they have to wait for any period of time AND if there is a learning curve involved in the process.

Ok I checked that link and come on..that is not good at all. It was written in 2011 and there was this tiny tidbit of verbage in the article that messes the concept up-

For the last couple of years, there have been touchscreen kiosks stationed at at least seven McDonald's restaurants in Australia. McDonald's says they have no interest in replacing cashiers with kiosks in Australia, however, or anywhere else for that matter.

When does it have to be all or nothing?

I still see cashiers next to the auto check-outs.  Save a cashier or two can really help the bottom line.  

But you already knew that....

If I'm investing my own money to start a private business, or, for that matter, a team, I don't want you, Ted Kennedy, Ted Cruz or anyone else telling me who is going to be on my team or what I should pay them. It is bad enough that people who have NEVER run a business want to tell me how to run mine. It is worse when these government types, who foul up everything they touch, decide they are going to tell me how to make my business work. Keep those failures away from me. We'll all be better off.

What do you mean that is not good at all.  It doesn't make any difference what year it happened, the point is that the min wage law was changed over there and that is what happened.  Of course not every single person will be replaced by kiosk, but enough will that it will make a difference in the sector. 

Also what is happening at Chili's and Applebees is just a sign at what is coming.  

People our age would rather be waited on by a real person at a sit down and FF place.  But what about young people in their 20's and younger.  They have grown up with these devices and most would rather interact with a computer than face to face with a person, which is sad to say. 

It will be more and more that way with the older generation dying off and the younger generation moving up the chain.

Ken:  Nobody is telling you how to run your business.  They ARE telling you that slave wages will not be tolerated.  It's quite obvious that there needs to be regulation in place concerning the minimum wage.  We see how the 1%ers squeeze blood from a stone.  What is wrong with a 90 Day Trial Period for an entry level unskilled position?  Keep good workers, Fire bad workers, Repeat.  Until you have the team you want and need. 

What's the problem?

It was seven stores..almost like a pilot test to see the terrible results..haha

To me it isnt about devices, but you are right..my kiddo is a total pro at Ipad and laptop computing. In schools they are teaching powerpoint, social media interaction, word and excel all before middle school.

To me it is about profits..how can you make more money more efficiently. When the cost of labor starts exceeding the cost of good sold, then you can start to worry but it isnt even close yet. As I mentioned in the other message, I'd pay a good upselling cashier 20 bucks an hour as you know your sales will be higher, margins better and speed of service far superior over kiosks. Paying someone a superior wage who can increase your profits IS good business..

Show me a kiosk where including order taking, payment and food delivery can beat 90 seconds total transaction time and I MIGHT discuss this as plausible. Then show me 20-25 of them working smoothly and you have the equiv of 2-3 solid cashiers working your lunch/dinner rush.

It is being done in grocery stores. There may be 1 or 2 check-out lines with a cashier but off to the side there are at least 4 manual kiosk/check-outs. There is usually one employee standing there just to make sure everything goes OK but those machines have taken over and replaced humans. Twenty years ago no one would have probably forsaw that.

As far as fast food joints, right now I would have no idea how a machine would get an order right: xtra mayo, no onions, etc, but I bet they could have machines to take our order and money.

Twenty years from now they may have machines that read our minds. I won't be surprised if more and more locations (fast food, grocery stores, Pep Boys, etc) go to partial to full automation.

Yeah I use them here at the local Kroger store...called Fry's down here.

People STILL want to go to the main register, not me but most do. It is also much less complex scanning a bar code, but even with the high majority of bar codes you still have produce and bulk which requires manual entry and some smarts..

I see the single employee flooded with issues ranging from wrong codes, coupons, weight issues etc etc. 

One chain down here Albertsons had them and pulled them because of the issues and inefficiencies. Another has it but you can tell it isnt heavily used.

I would say at BEST a FF place would have it as an option to use, but not the sole use of order entry.

I am not sure---at FF I would rather have kiosk.  A lot of the people there are knuckleheads.  Nice places where you tip for good service---no kiosk.

What's the problem?

Goose--I don't have anyone making the minimum, but I don't need the government to prescribe wages, trial periods or anything else. The only thing people in Congress know about business is that most of them have never succeeded at it.

Believe me.  Extra mayo and no oniions, all that can easily be set up to do and rather quickly.  Computers amazing things.  The future is a coming and the times they are a changing.

Nearly everyone use self-serve gas pumps now---I want self-serve FF!  Do not have to deal with folks messing it up---etc.  Order, get food, be on my way, eat food.  Eventually it will be way more consistent and more efficient than folks.  Never count my change from snack machine; always count my change from minimum wage employees!

There is a recent restaraunt that popped up in LA called Stacked. Not fast food but all they do are sandwichs burgers pizza and appetizers. Every table has an iPad and you order and pay (slide your card) through the tablet. Couple of servers deliver and maybe check in once or twice to see how it is all going. I am sure it is not the only one and paving the way for more automation in the food service industry.

Regardless of how much hatred you harbor for Kiosks they are here to stay and will increase...

1. Bank ATM is a kiosk...
2. Self checkout at hardware store is a kiosk...
3. Self checkout at grocery store is a kiosk...
4. Boarding pass dispenser at airport is a kiosk...
5. When you buy gas at a gas pump you are using a kiosk...
6. Photo kiosks are common at drug stores...
7. When you rent a movie at a Red Box you are using a kiosk...
8. I have seen internet access kiosks in Vegas hotels...
9. Movie theaters use ticket kiosks...
10. Hertz and Alamo use kiosks in their car rental locations...

There are also visitor management and security kiosk... Building directory and way-finding kiosks exist... Hospital and medical clinic registration and check-in kiosks...

And last but not least is Fast Food kiosks...

I call RedBox a kiosk because I can browse all videos that are available in real time from home on my laptop and place the video on hold till I can drive to the RedBox and get the video.
