I definitely wouldn't choose soccer over the three main sports in the U.S. but I have been watching it and it has been exciting to me.
The main reason American fans don't like soccer is the low scoring. Take football for instance, most fans want to see a 42-40 game instead of a 9-6 (LSU vs Bama 2011).
I was happy LSU won that night. I didn't care about the score. Everyday fans of football said it was the most boring game they had ever seen in their lives.
I think that is the same mentality Americans have with soccer, and to a lesser extent, baseball.
I don't have a problem with a low-scoring game if it's well played. If it's due to ineptness (qb's missing wide open receivers or balls being dropped, fumbles, etc.) then it gets pretty lame.
The offsides rule is puzzling me to me. It must have been enacted during the early days of the game & since has become obsolete............but, as was mentioned earlier, the purists would never accept it's elimination.

Purists don't know what is good for the game. I made my point earlier with the 3 point line with basketball. We would not enjoy the magnificent glory of hoops nowadays without it. IT would be a very boring low tier sport in the US. I am very convinced of that FACT
Soccer would do well to open up the scoring, I remain convinced of that as well. The purists would lament as a new generation of fans would push them aside.

Besides that, as I can see... the off-sides rule is officiated poorly.
I would say about 50% of the time they get it right. It is such a very marginal call... how many times have you watched a game turning goal to be turned down due to an ERROR on the offisides call??? Happens way more than it should. I don't blame the linesman... nobody can keep a perfect eye on two moving objects at the same time.

I think you are right, only partially. I also love a good defensive battle in hoops or football. A pitchers duel in bases is very nice.
The low scoring does not help for sure. But I think it has more to do with many more flaws in the international soccer game. The flopping, the OT rules, the constant BS on the field.
The offsides is a big deal, more than you might think.
Let the players defend the goal, not an arbitrary line that is mis-called as much it is called correctly.

Sportsfan: I couldn't disagree more with everything you've said about the game of soccer. But, this is your thread and you are entitled to do what you please with it.
Just for the record, I never tried to insult you. I just think your opinion on soccer is amateur at best. Just because you played goalie in high school 20 years ago, by no means makes you an expert of the game. Some of us have played the game their entire life and appreciate the nuances that make the game great. The offside penalty just happens to be one of them.
I've read your stuff on this site before and actually like your take on most things. I just cant wrap my head around anything you've said regarding soccer.
So with that I will agree to disagree with you. Just know that I'm not a troll on this site, and was never attacking you personally.
Peace

Fair enough Jose... we can agree to disagree.
I envision a game that would be so much more exciting, and prosperous to not only the US sports fan, but worldwide.
You disagree. How can I argue with 5 billion people? lol
I am a visionary, I just think I have a better solution. As for your inference as to why should us Americans think we could improve what the rest of the world have enjoyed.... well that is actually the history of Americans. We have been making life and solutions better for the world for the last 200 years. If your politics deny you to agree, I will not argue - it is pointless.

So, you think purists would abandon soccer if the offsides rule were changed? DH, 3pt line, specialty pass rushers, middle relief pitchers, and many other rules changes to sports to increase scoring and they have way more fans now. I think it would be fine in the long-run.
So, by extrapolation, maybe a team would leave 2 or 3 or 4 guys closer to goal if defense kept a guy back also? This strategy would not last long. Basketball is different in that there is no goalie. So in soccer there is a goalie and he could guard the guy left back very close until a break away came.
I don't think you have to play soccer at an extremely high level to understand it in its current state. The majority of the world has not; and they love it. But I could argue it is all they have known until we have slowly introduced other sports to them. Most people by nature like action and scoring---why we have changed all sports to have more scoring. Even partially why we looked other way during steriods era in baseball.

Steroids were allowed in baseball for one reason, money. Selig let the roids go in order to bring back the fans that were pissed off about the strike. Remember the slogan, "chicks dig the long ball?" They let it go until records were being broken, then stepped in and regulated it.
I've stated my opinion on soccer and offsides enough in this thread. If you guys want to change the game, write FIFA a letter and get it going.

There is little to no transparency in the clock. Stop it when a player is laying on the ground or after a goal.
If a player is fouled he should have to take the penalty kick.
The flopping.
The gambling aspect is not necessarily more complex but different than what US gamblers are accustomed to.
The shootouts. I hate them. Hockey doesn't have it in the playoffs. Give the guys a breather and keep bringing them back or allow more subs. Maybe even nix the offsides rule once 120 have been played I don't know I just hate the shootouts.
The transfer market and the fact there are so many leagues. Every other major sport all the best players are in the same league no one is out on loan.
I'm okay with the low scoring and the offsides rule. Lot of things I'd change though.

Wasn't being smart---was simply asking. Steriods were looked the other way because of the quick scoring. I do not think soccer would be abandoned by purists if it were tweaked. I was asking if you do? In other words, would you stop watching soccer?

I really don't know. I think a tweak would completely change the game. I've actually never heard anyone talk about considering it. I would be surprised if anyone that actually plays soccer right now, would want the offside rule to be changed. It's a pretty major rule and a large part of the game, IMO.
I've played in the back my entire life, so maybe my opinion is biased a little bit, but I don't think so. To be quite honest, it sounds like an "American" thing to even suggest.
The entire planet lives and dies for this sport, the way it is right now. I think they would agree with me.

On other sites I have seen discussions about it. Yes, for sure it is an 'American' thing; usually suggested to try to make it more appealling to Americans.
I don't think you are biased as much as honest. It is ingrained in everyone and we just accept it. I didn't like NFL rules being changed to allow easier scoring, but grew to be okay with it. Didn't like lines call technology in tennis, but okay with it now. If tomorrow they had a great system for balls and strikes, I think I would be okay with it.

I didn't mean websites when referring to people talking about tweaking the offsides rule. I meant anyone I've ever played with, and still play with today. I've never been in the presence of someone suggesting the offsides rule needing to be changed.
Maybe I'm wrong, and you guys are right. Maybe the rest of the world wants to change the rules to make the game more appealing for people watching it on TV, but I doubt it.
Now, technology that would make sure every offside call is correct, that would be something entirely different. But doing away with the call, or allowing some players to be offside, that changes how the game is played, not improving the quality of officiating.
Just my 2 cents though.

Very interesting debate. Although I played as a youth, coached my son's team a few years ago, and recently began watching and wagering on the sport, there are some things that are difficult to adjust to from the American POV.
Our sports leagues here tailored the rules for more scoring and action. And that's okay, that's what the people want and for the most part, is good for the game. Some will disagree. I enjoyed the Jordan era of basketball and how the Pistons or Knicks would beat up people. But I also enjoy the athleticism that is on display in the today's NBA. The same goes for NFL and making the rules pro-offense. So I am accepting of change
The beauty of this game is in the frustration of it. You work so damn hard to gain possession, advance through the midfield, get men in the right spots, just for that one chance! That chance that may never come to fruition. The attack dies, the kick sails wide, the guy on the receiving end doesn't come through, and so on. But when that chance finally does come, and you capitalize, its a great feeling.
The fact that the clock is running and the program is not interrupted to sell you beer, trucks, boner pills, fast food, etc., is perhaps the best part of it all. Someone mentioned the end of an NBA game as brutal. And it is. I have literally turned games off because I simply could not deal with the timeouts and fouls.
One quirky rule I would like to institute is a penalty box. For those obvious offenders of flopping. Specifically have referees who focus on such actions and if deemed over the top, you get 2 or 5 minutes in the penalty box for acting a damn fool. Power Play!

I love soccer and hope it's never a major sport here. If it is we'll try to change it. It's the most popular sport in the world by miles and is doing great. I'm glad it's boring to most americans. I can love it in peace.

All sports have changed---might be time for a subtle change or two to soccer as well.

The clock running up, the flops, the "lack" of scoring has little to do with why we American's will never fully embrace soccer. They might be little pieces and play a roll but IMO the real reason is this...
We do no produce the best players nor do we have the best league.
Our soccer league, the MLS, and our home grown soccer players as a whole are not widely considered the best in the world. The MLS is pretty much laughable in terms of leagues in the world. La Liga, Serie A, The Premier league is what we would need. We don't have that. Your average American does not want to watch mostly average on the world scale teams and players. Sure we have some good ones, but our best ones generally play overseas as do the best players in the world.
Take the NBA, best league in world. MLB, best league in world. NFL, best league in world. NHL, best league in world. With NBA and NFL no one would argue that we dont produce by and large the best talent country vs. country. MLB is very debatable but we are still up there with the likes of PR and a couple others. Plus it is our pastime.
Soccer is not. Sure, our kids play youth and run up and down the field like sheep, which is all great and fun, but until we have a top tier league and by and large a top tiered nation, or at least close in both, no one will care sans the world cup.
I coach high school soccer and love it, but I can't get into the MLS knowing the competition in European leagues is the cream of the crop. If I lived in Europe, Id be all over it, and I did for 6 months, and I lived and died for AS Roma.
This is why soccer is not big time here and will never be in the near future.
Also, I would hate to see offsides gone. I see I am in the minority in this thread, but I agree with Jose, I like to build up. I can't imagine having to figure out how to spread my players on the field if there were no offsides. The entire game would change more than you think. The domino effect (regardless of whether or not someone cherry picks) would be very difficult. talent would change to an extent and we would see a totally different game. The game all in all is great. Sure it has some kinks, don't all games?
And yes I hate the flop!

And yes I hate the flop!

I love soccer and hope it's never a major sport here. If it is we'll try to change it. It's the most popular sport in the world by miles and is doing great. I'm glad it's boring to most americans. I can love it in peace.
