The rest of the field? Incredible value with the lowest odds being 12-1 and the highest being 99-1. I've never seen the second best odds being 12-1.
So they scratch the 3 horse and now there are only 7 horses in the race.
The race starts and I shi* you not, AP won it so easily that the jockey pulled up on him in the stretch so he won't be taxed for the next race (again, something I've never seen). That's how a) dominant he was or b) how poor this field was. I can't tell which.
And incredibly, and I've never seen this the $.10 superfecta paid.....$3.50!!!!!!!
Absolutely no way to make money off this race and a million ways to lose a ton.
Has anyone ever seen a bigger favorite than 1-9 in a field bigger than 5 horses?

AP goes off at get this....one to NINE!!!
GTFO! Unbettable at those odds.

Didn't Zenyatta go off at that at a couple of those races before losing that heartbreaker to Blame? My memory's not 100%, but I think that was the case.....

That does sound familiar. Anyhow, when a horse goes off at 1-9 the point that no money will be made of he wins, even with superfectas, is not lost.

A horse can't go off any longer then 1-9 on the odds board even if the true odds are 1-20 for the sake of display of the odds. If the race presents a sure winner, bet it like a sure thing. There may not be 3 horses on the continent that can beat AmPh so there sure weren't 3 horses in that race that could beat him."Absolutely no way to make money off that race"??????
Bet $20,000 show with a guaranteed 2.10 payout @Monmouth even with a minus pool and an additional 5% bonus payout on all wagers at the local track I belong to. I made $1050. on that race not counting the 30,000 points I also earned for that wager that I use for comps.
American Pharoah was an Underlay if he was only 1-9 true odds.

My Mother-In-Law, who is huge into horse racing calls these 1/9 wagers "Bridge Jumpers". Because if that horse stumbles out of the gate, or the jockey falls off, it breaks it's leg, or what have you - You've got so much riding on this wager to actually turn a decent profit, that you're going to go jump off a bridge if it loses.....
BTW - Mike Smith might of had/will have an illustrious career, but he's going to go down in history as the jockey on Zenyatta that came in second on that final race. He held her back too long in my opinion......

I'm not going to drop $20,000 on a -900 favorite. That is lunacy. And yes, I've seen 1-7's fail to come in the money in a 5 horse race.
Amazing that it doesn't go higher than 1-9. I didn't know that.
You may not want to take that route, but there's plenty of people in the horse racing game where money isn't an object. So dropping $20k on a horse at 1-9 is nothing (Especially if it looks as easy as this particular race did)

Your mother is partially correct. "Bridge Jumpers" generally refers to people who bet a ton of money on these short priced horses to "Show"

Scal, Scal, Scal...this isn't the FIRST race you've even seen...is it?!?
If the topic of debate is strictly on the BETTING side of this race, then the bigger story is people trying to beat AP (ya know, to get "value"). Greed and degeneracy are two tragic sides to the game--so be it.
If you want to talk about "a joke of a race", then maybe you didn't hear about the recent arrests of 3 jockeys for racing fixing? I know, I know, "probably not the first time....not the last time". But why is THIS instance so stupid:
The field was only 6 horses...(pause)...(pause)...yes, HALF the entrants were accused of wrongdoing. One of the idiots even lets his horse pass for 3rd right at the wire; they were going for the "off the board" finish, but the horse ahead just tires, while his horse had been held back the whole time. And the payoffs??? ::YAWN::
here's the vid for anyone interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wII4p6JuaYg
as far as low prices go, there was a race at Arlington Park years ago (the Gold Cup), where the field was 4-deep. Maaaaaaybe 5. They still offered a dime-super, and I'm pretty sure it paid $0.12.

Sorry, that's what I meant. $2 bet pays what, like $2.05, $2.10 to show?? So, your "profit" of $0.05 or $0.10 on a $2.00 bet? So, times that by $100,000 or, what have you...... Like I said, that horse breaks it's leg or something out of the gate, you're fukked.........

There is a saying about 1-9 shots..."If you got the nine, why do you need the one".
Not every horse race is betable. That race was one to watch a champion in action and applaud him for his talents.
Not to mention you probably won't see such a huge favorite go down, while nationally televised. Meaning, superior class like that usually makes for a sound race.
but make it a race at Mountaineer, Sunland, Evangeline (and a few others)...and it's a bingo game. the only time I dared 'bridge-jumping' was on a Tuesday night (says DEGEN all over it) at Mountaineer. 1/9 Fave runs dead last...I had $50 on a 15/1 longshot to Show. It paid $700+.

This race had nothing to do with wagering other than to fill a sure spot for your pic 4,5 or 6 ect, ect. To even suggest otherwise shows your lack of understanding and appreciating watching the greatest horse of our era run again. An avid/knowledgeable true horse fan/better would just kick back and take it all in. Your lust for losing and commenting on a sport you obviously know nothing about just shows your pathetic desire to talk a lot but say nothing. Next time turn the TV off and beat off.

To clarify... AP went off at 1-9 on the toteboard because that is the lowest odds that can be represented on the board but by checking the charts from Sunday show that he was .10 on the $1,hence 1-10,hence the payoff of 2.20 to win.
If betting to make $ at the racetrack,(the only reason to spend 3 hours with such a vulgar crowd) the pros aren't spreading small amounts on big longshots but are dumping large amounts on short-price sure things.
If you want to sit on the veranda and smell the horsesh*t, go ahead but none of the horses would be running if there was no betting and the only reason to bet is to make $ and there is more then 1 way to get $ out of the pool.

A smart better goes to a race track and bets maybe 2-4 races. This would not be one of them. You want to show your friends your $2 show ticket on AP; go for it.

At 1-9 odds or worse, the race track will lose money. After deducting he track "rake" from the Show, Place and Win Pools and dividing the remaining amounts up between the winning tickets, Pharoah mathematically would only pay $1.80 or so for a $2.00 ticket and since, by law, the track must return a minimum of $2.10 they wind up losing money on that race.

First race. Citation, among others, 1-20. When it's not hoops season, stick to UFO's and "White People" bullshit.
So let me get this straight: you are in a thread where several hardcore pony bettors have said the odds on a favorite can't exceed 1-9 but you claim its 1-20....

In that race I would disregard AP absolutely and cap the field for place and show.
It is never worth it to bet chalk like that. Yes he could stumble out of the gate, but more likely is that the trainer decides to just use this race as a "workout"
