I don't see how Loyola and shithole should be in the same sentence.
The Uptown (where Loyola campus is) and the neighboring Garden District areas of N.O. are awesome. It smells like Magnolia blossoms during the day and jasmine at night.Plus it's right next to Tulane U. and the Audobon Park/zoo and Cooter Brown's which is a great beer bar with decent grub is within stumbling distance. Also you can always take the St.Charles Ave. streetcar line to some other really good bars/musical venues without worrying about a DUI.
I do agree however that the crime rate in the city is high (always keep your wallet in your front pocket) and the police and government is corrupt.

Actually New Orleans is one of the few cities where that isn’t the case. The entire city is checkered. You might live in a really nice neighborhood, but live about a mile away from a shit neighborhood.
I’ve always lived in nice neighborhoods and New Orleans was the only city where I didn’t feel safe parking my car on the street in front of my house. Of course it’s also the only city where my car was stolen.
I met a few nice people (some of which I still talk to) and they have some good food. Other than that, New Orleans is a cesspool.

I can certainly understand how somebody would have reservations about living in New Orleans but as far as spending your college years at Loyola I think that that is a small risk/large rewards proposition. I have searched the net to try to find ANY stories about Loyola and crime and I can't find anything.
I find New Orleans to be a very spiritual place and have never felt threatened there (although I am very cautious) in fact I would rate my top 5 old soul spiritual cities as;
1 - New Orleans
2 - Key West
3 - Savannah
4 - Charleston
5 - Richmond
