Why help the kid look more "full autistic" than he needs to?

I have a buddy with TWO autistic children.  He also was CFO for the MN Autism center for over 5 years.  Hugely involved in legislation and the treatment of autism.  

He thought the boots comment was funny.  It's a serious issue for sure, but did it really appear the comment was a real live attempt to ridicule autistic children?  I think not.  People take themselves to seriously these days.
