Can college athletes gamble?

I know they do, but I don't know if they can legally(NCAA rules). I know the NCAA frowns on sports wagering, but what about everything else in the Casino?

 First, they would have to be over 21. But, I have a feeling they are not allowed too. I could be wrong, I can see a kid on summer break going to Vegas with his friends. Not sure if the school has any right or not to tell him he can't go. I am sure during school, they are not allowed too.

They would have to be over 21 only if the casino they are in serves booz. The school can tell the kid whatever they want to since it's the school's team, especially if the kid is riding a scholarship.


I'm really just interested in the NCAA's policy. The website just lists sports wagering as a big no-no but I wanted to know if they can throw down punishments for other forms of gambling as well.

Not from wat i remember. Sure it could have changed but doubt they would add it. I had to sign the clearing house thing for NCAA, grades, rules etc..., this was  back a little while now 1997 but Gamling was on it, i remember for obvious reasons!!!

probably not, but i have seen a recently graduated wvu athlete at an illegal poker game while he was still playing, but technical the game was illegal anyways, so i guess it would have been a double whammy.  my guess is no they coudlnt go to casinos because the ncaa fears the seedy types who go there.

You don't have to be 21 to go into a Casino regardless of they serve drinks or not???
 
I thought you had to be 21 to gamble.

not true, turning stone in verona ny is 18. no alcohol there.

I was working in gym few years ago and was pretty good friends with a Div I basketball player form a southern conference school who would come in and work out alot, he's pretty smart guy and was a senior.  Anyways, it was aorund march madness tiem and we were running an ncaa pool, and he came in one night an d I aske dhim if he wanted in on it.  He said he couldn't cause its against ncaa rules. 
 
I'm sure alot do, but dont know the specifics of what they can and cant do.

I played NCAA Golf for 4 years and every year we had the Compliance Officer sit down and go over his whole routine....
 
He would spend a good hour talking about gambling and how you will get thrown off the team if caught....
 
 
And I played GOLF....not even a sport that people bet on.
 
 
 
 
Now thats not to say that I or others did not/dont gamble when they are in school. You just have to keep it on the down low.

weathered is correct, i played baseball at rutgers and he is right...didn't stop me from going to atlantic city though...

I believe you can gamble at 18. I remember horse racing was always 18 and mostly all of the tracks built casinos around here so I assume the age stayed the same at 18.  Drinking is 21 here.
 
For college athletes, I believe you can't wager in a casino due to the NCAA frowning on gambling and the agreement they make you sign before you are eligible to play collegiate sports. I don't know if it has been changed since I have been in school. But I doubt it with the hysteria that seems to guide the NCAA. They don't even want you having a job for fear that you may receive special treatment by alumnists.

I played in the late 90's ('96-'99) and it was the same then

you had to sign your life away....and if you got a job you had to report all your wages and income to the Compliance Officer

I had a relative pass away and leave me some money when I was in school so at the time I bought a new car....that was a pain in the ass as well....I had to show how I got the money and all that

and again I did not even play football or hoops....those guys had it 10x worse from the NCAA

 

but the trade off for them was a free education and tons of girls lining up to sleep with them

 

for some reason the Golf team did not get those perks

My brother played basketball in conference usa and when they would play nevada, they were not allowed to even step foot in the casino but when he transfered to the big ten, his coach's knew he played hold em but didnt really care. Just as long as he didnt wear school stuff when he was there.
