Growing up in South Boston in the 60's was an education that lead to all kinds of gaming from throwing quarters on the corner to picking up numbers from the neighborhood wives. In the neighborhood we could see who rode high and who didn't. My first boss was Tony I guess he was Southie mob guy but actually he was from Blue Hill so those kids that ran for him became known as the Blue Hill gang of which I became a proud member.
My first real play was on my 16th birthday. I had finally convinced Tony our barber and candy store owner to let me make a play I put all 600 dollars I had saved from running for Tony all spring on the Sox and 600 bucks was a ton of money to a kid from Southie. I remember it like it was yesterday. The Sox were still being coached by Pesky, it was Tony Conigilaro's rookie season and person "the monster" Radatz lead the Sox to a strike out record with 181K's and earned his way into the all star game.
After getting Tony to agree to cover my action I handed him an envelope with 600 and told him to let it all ride against the hated Yankee's the date was 6/9/1964 a day I will never forget.
The game was in Boston the Yanks and the Sox had about the same record. Mikey Mantel and Roger Maris were coming to Boston Al Downing was on the mound for the Yanks. The Sox had Tony C and Yaz swinging the bat with Earl Wilson on the mound and the great person Radatz in the bullpen available for relief I just knew the Sox were going to win and I was going to have the biggest bankroll of any kid in Southie..I just knew it...
Tony took my envelope looked inside and said, "O.K. kid your officially on my pad but don't expect to work for me and play with me too" " It don't work that way in Southie but because its your birthday I'll take it." It was a 6/5 line but he told me," no vig for you cause a virgins first time is on me but don't come crying if they lose." " A bet is a bet whether you JFK or the f...king Pope."
and so it began...

I find this story quite interesting, as I grew up in that part of the country in the 1950s and 60s. You may remember the Columbia Point projects, or Blue Hill Ave, Roxbury.

On gameday, we snuck in through the south gate with Bobby Shea our favorite hot dog vendor and headed for the cheap seats in right. We liked to be as far up as possible so you got less beer chucked on your head when the Yanks hit the ball somewhere one of the drunks didn't approve.
All the neighborhoods had groups gathered in the sun charged for the game. I had a knot the size of a fist in my guts and was pouring water like a sweat hog. My friend, tuna can Tommy, Danny Potts and Juliano Caldera flanked me in the stands and took every opportunity to wind me up.
It was perfect afternoon, the Sox and as expected came away on top after Maris gave us scare with a dinger in the 8th but Radatz saved the day. Yaz had a good day but Tony C couldn't find the ball luckily Downing keep putting guys on base at the right time.
I floated from the park, I was f..king rich and on may way to being king of the hill or so I thought.. When it came time for Tony to pay me up I learned differently... Oh,I got my money and an education at the same time.

In the old days the suckers paid on Mondays and the books settled on Tuesdays. As the Yanks and Sox game was played on a Tuesday afternoon I had to wait till the following week to pick up and needless to say it was not painless.
I dropped my slips and headed into the back room Monday afternoon after school. Tony was cussing about something another and when he saw me he hollers," You lucky little punk, I hope your not looking to pick up today, Come back tomorrow after school and bring your uncle with you."
My uncle Jake was a commercial fisherman as was my Dad and well known in Southie. He was a hard living, hard drinking, hard working type with a gutter mouth and an attitude but I adored him and in my mind no one was more capable of negotiating the pitfalls of South Boston than he, but why did Tony want me to bring him? I had kept this all a secret from my Dad and Jake and now it would all come out in the open.Crap this was not going the way I had planned.

I spent the week anticipating my soon to be windfall running between my weekly tasks and of course checking the box scores in the Hearld.
School was winding down and a pissa summer was on the horizon.
I ran slips all week for Tony after school from the flower shops to the dry cleaners Tony had everybody it seemed. Every one in the neighborhood was some how touched back in those days although I had heard talk that old Taxachussetts was going to take it all away with some lottery thing in the planning.
The big day came to collect my winnings and with my uncle in tow we headed to see Tony after stopping for beer for my Uncle. I had confessed to my uncle but not my Dad and was still a little on edge when Tony waived us in.
He started with the Boston bull that is always passed between the men of southie..the sox,the cops, the summer and the soon to be dog days .He was talking about fishing and Paragon Park, summer horse and dog races at Wonderland and Suffolk everything except why we had come.As i squirmed in my chair waiting for some bomb to drop Tony pulled an envelope from the drawer and slid it over to Jake.He looked at me and said, " I don't pay kids or take play from kids and never do I keep it a secret!" "I took your play this one time and one time only," turning to Jake he said, " I never thought the little garbage had the balls I was hoping he would lose and learn a lesson but lucky little prick hits," he said chuckling. He told my Uncle Jake he knew he would do whats best with my money.
All I could think about was great now I gotta get it from Jake this was going to take some fancy footwork and a lot of beer.

My career starting and stalled on that day like the great Dorchester fire in May came in hot and went out in ashes. But I knew I wasn't done forever I just had to find someone else to cover my plays and not let Tony, my uncle or my pops find out.
So the summer came and I ran my behind off, partied, chased girls at the beach got in all kinds of mischief and learned all I could from every player who would share their knowledge with me. I was getting an education that could not be bought and I didn't even know it.
Jake hadn't told my Dad we made a deal and he squirreled away the cash less a couple cases of beer and I went on a search to find another spot to wager that would keep me clear of the neighborhood and Tony.

Its hard to tell this story in this format on covers the obvious colorful language required is edited by the covers word trust but someday I'll publish the whole story.I think it's an interesting tale if I can find a professional to help write and edit the story. It looks like soon enough I'll have plenty of time to work on it.The weening process is beginning and by the end of the year I expect to be in gamblers rehab.

My personal rules that can improve your sports betting:
1. Money management. Bet less than 5% of your total current bankroll per bet. Use Kelly Criterion Calculator. Be discipline.
For example: If your total bankroll is $2000. 5% of your $2000 is $100. If you lose your $100 bet, now you have $1900. 5% of your $1900 is $95. Now you bet $95 instead of $100 because of your total current bankroll has changed. Bet like this and you can either slowly gain or slowly lose but can never be completely broke.
2. Be a strategic gambler by picking your spots and wait for the right opportunity. Never be a compulsive gambler by betting because it's your favorite team or for the action. Do your research. 3. Stay emotionless all the time. Bet like a robot. There's no place for emotions in this profession. Be unbiased. 4. Do not judge a team based on what they did last week. 5. Never bet on heavily juiced/vig lines. Like a line at -1000 for example. 6. Never bet on heavily valued lines. Like a terrible team at 100 to 1 odds to win championship. 7. Parlays should be no longer than 2 teams, the bigger the parlay is, the bigger the House Edge. Research and Secure your first pick before moving on to your second pick. 8. Teasers should never pass through the zero. Maximize your odds by betting on 7 point teasers on sides. Ignore teasers that are 6 point, 6.5 point and on totals. Teasers and Parlays give the sportsbooks the most house edge. If you had to bet on one of these, it would be on the 7 point teaser. https://wizardofodds.com/games/sports-betting/appendix/10/ https://wizardofodds.com/games/sports-betting/nfl-parlay/ 9. Teams with home field/court advantage tend to win games. Sportsbooks know this and favorites the home team. "Whoever is first in the field and awaits the coming of the enemy, will be fresh for the fight; whoever is second in the field and has to hasten to battle will arrive exhausted." -Sun Tzu, the Art of War Since sportsbooks likes to juice the ATS and ML on home teams this gives the disadvantage to gamblers. So I like teasing home teams than away teams because that gives me the better spread with home field advantage. 10. Never bet on double digit road favorites. You will lose in the long run. 11. Never bet on preseason games on any sport. Predicting on 2nd string teams is stupid because of the lack of game footage on mostly unknown players. 12. Understand how to bet on underdogs ML and ATS: https://www.wagerminds.com/blog/nfl-handicapping/how-often-do-nfl-underdogs-win-outright-a-historical-analysis-by-spread-ranges-2496/ 13. Injury factor: The injury factor seems more severe in basketball since it's 5 players on the court. While other sports like football and baseball, the injury factor is less severe as there are more than 5 players on the field and as long it's not injuries to the QB in football and the pitcher in baseball, which are critical positions. 14. If you are extremely compulsive, arrogant, drunk and biased. The best advice is to "Don't Gamble". 15. Learn from your mistakes. Most gamblers don't learn from their mistakes. That's why I made these gambling rules.
I found this useful info from another source:
1. Establish a base line for the game to determine value when a line is more or less than your number. You can do this by using power ratings and weekly adjustment charts to update each team's power rating weekly.
2. Situational handicapping- look for things like revenge, maybe a player is shooting his mouth off, key injuries. Note; linemakers are sharp and generally build the line to compensate for the injury, it's when the public overbets the injury to look at playing the otherside.
3. Statistical handicapping- does a team have a top ranked rushing or passing game going against a low ranked defense. Turnovers?
4. Fundemental handicapping- are their any strong trends or coaching advantages. How well do they play on the road? What is their red zone %, are they able to run the clock out with a lead, etc...
