*DENVER April 3rd, 2024 — A Denver man said he’s been restricted on how much money he can bet on sportsbooks because he won too much. Cody Sudmeier said in a six-week stretch between December and January, he made over $50,000 on various sportsbooks.
That’s when he started noticing something strange. “I was getting up to where I was placing $1,000 bets on a game, $2,000 bets,” said Sudmeier. “And then I go to make the same bet and it says, ‘Oh, you’ve been restricted to $100.’” Sudmeier said he thought there had been a mistake, so he emailed customer support. “At first I thought this can’t be right, you’d think the casinos are typically trying to get you to bet more,” said Sudmeier. “So, I email customer support, and you get canned responses. You can tell this is something they get a lot, and this is common practice for these guys.” In one instance, Sudmeier says he’s been limited to a maximum bet of $15.60 on the Fanatics Sportsbook. Fanatics did not immediately respond to a request for comment from 9NEWS.
A spokesperson for the Colorado Department of Revenue said the practice is completely legal because each sportsbook is tied to a brick-and-mortar casino. “Casinos are private companies and have the right to ask gamblers to leave, or change the limits of bets at any time,” wrote Dan Carr via email. “Every sports book in Colorado is tied to a brick and mortar casino, so the same rules would apply for the app-based sports books as well.” Sudmeier said that doesn’t feel fair and plans to ask legislators to investigate the situation. Records show Colorado sportsbooks profited a record amount in January, with more than $53.4 million in Gross Gaming Revenue. “I don’t think it’s fair at all. It’s a regulated industry, nd at its core, there’s an assumption that if you’re gambling, there is the possibility that you can win,” said Sudmeier. “Casinos draw in customers by saying you can win here. So, I think it’s important they allow people to win.”*

Nothing unusual about being restricted esp after winning that kind of money
I put up a couple of threads recently about where UK players are having their winnings confiscated after they have won relatively small amounts
This is what kind of worries me more than anything, going after small & medium players who go on a heater win a few plays couple hundo a pop or win a few parlays and then get their money taken and the sportsbooks then hide behind excuses like having to conform to responsible social gambling ,affordability checks, anti money laundering , betting with other peoples funds, inside info etc etc
Straight up racketeering is what it is

Fanatics likely has a fresh out of school risk management staff paying them next to nothing and threatening their jobs if they dont maintain a +1000% profit margin. The staff under the gun want the book to win as much as the players want to win.

That's so true but I think the sportsbooks have more of a carrot rather than a stick approach, meaning their traders get big sexy bonuses if targets are met by restricting winners
and also encouraging degenerate addicts to bet more including those who choose to self exclude by enticing them with free bets and other comps and prizes

COVERS allows u to tell someone they are sexually frustrated so long as ur hands are clean

How do they plan on getting their money back from that player if they limit play from someone who could potentially bet large and lose....smaller bets means less exposure, yes, but it can also mean it takes much longer to get that money back....seems like a bad way of looking at it....they should raise his limits and let him make the mistake of going larger than his normal sized wager...that's what casinos would do...

In New York there is the Largest handle of any state in the Union. Two of the main books are Draftkings&Fandual and the CEO of Draftkings has said that he doesn't want 'professional' bettors but 'recreational' bettors.Bettors can get limited if they bet into numbers BEFORE they make a move even if the bet loses. Like card-counters,you don't have a constitutional right to bet at a book/casino and you practice at the whim of management. Draftkings has moved out of 1 Up-state casino and Twin -spires has just shut down its NY platform and only takes in person bets. I have to drive 60 miles to make a bet and I will be arrested if I walk into another casino. ( I have been arrested)It's the old game ....Heads I Win/Tails you Lose.

This is why I don’t wager with online books anymore. Scratch my head and wonder why anybody would not stay anonymous and wager with a brick and mortar sports establishment.
I have a State OTB 10 minutes from my home and wager with Fanatics at a kiosk. Many times I have wagered $1K on a team and then made the same wager again for another $1K. This keeps me under the the magic $1,250 reporting threshold and I am incognito and invisible to the powers that be.

That is one way to get around that problem of restrictions by ''structuring '' your bet into two or more smaller ones at different times or with different books
Problem with that is line/price may have moved after you place you first bet or the odds may become lower so profitability will be affected but getting down is the main thing in some ways
Didn't you say last year you were banned from all of Bally's nationwide ? And if you go back would that be considered 'trespassing' ?

GG I don't think betting at brick and mortar and kiosks is anonymous. I bet at the Borgata and their kiosks and you need a players card!!! If you go up to the window to cash a small bet at the kiosk they ask you for your card!!!!
