I'll start out by saying I used to be a big fan. I ate there about every other week between 2003 and 2005. I use to love the take two menu. You could get steak and chicken, steak and ribs, chicken and ribs, ect for a cheap price. Boy have things changed. Back in the day I use to get steak and grilled chicken breasts. It came with a sweet honey type sauce. You got two chicken breasts and a 8oz sirloin. Along with a potato and vegtables for a reasonable price.
Then they tried to save money and got rid of the sauce that came with the chicken breast. The breast were no longer flavored. Well fast forward to today and the cost cutting continues. Just got home and was less than impressed. My 9oz sirloin cost me 16.99. The same price a sirloin and two chicken breasts would of cost me 9 years ago. Do you get a salad with your meal? No. Do you get rolls with your meal? No. Instead of three scoops of vegtables you get one. I didn't get two chicken breasts yet I paid the same price I would of 9 years ago with them. Then to top off the insult to injury they have tablets at the table you can play games on but of course for an extra 99 cents.
I remember when applebees use to care about their customers. You got two good pieces of grilled chicken breasts, a nice size sirloin, two or three scoops of vegtables and a potato for a similar 16.99 price. You paid a lot but for the amount of food you got you left feeling pretty good about it.
Now the corporate applebees has taken over. For 16.99 you get one sirloin, one scoop of vegtables, much less of a potato, no chicken breasts, and the chance to play games at your table for an extra 99 cents. No salad with your meal no dinner rolls with your meal.
It will be another good 8 to 10 years before I choose to eat at another one. Everything done is not to make the customer happy or feel like they got a good deal with their meal. Everything is done to maximize profits.
I would highly suggest Red lobster, Texas Roadhouse, or a Perkins over any Applebees. Applebees charges you to the max and gives you very little for your money.

My suggestion is that you try several of the many independently owned restaurants at your disposal and stop supporting the franchised chains. You don't need to be a slave to their marketing/advertising.

Applebees has always been garbage in my book. You are right about margins and serving sizes shrinking, corporations across the board are doing this. They have to justify their stock prices, so since sales are really not increasing, they have to bump prices or shrink serving sizes.
To me I look at how much I would spend at a place like that and realize I can make better food for same or less price myself.

They put an Applebee's near me about 10 years ago. Tried a couple times & wasn't all that impressed........poor service, average food, pricey beer, etc. What capped it for me was one time I stopped in to get a beer & the entrance was loaded with people waiting to dine. I just walked past them into the bar & sat down @ a table. After sitting there for a couple minutes a gal came over & asked me who seated me there. I told her no one did, it's a bar & I just walked in. She told there were people waiting, that when they got busy they use the bar tables as overflow seating for dining, & that I would have to wait like everyone else. So I left. That was about 7-8 years ago & I've never gone back. Judging by the few cars in the parking lot when I drive by nowadays I'd say they're close to closing up shop.

would not feed my Dog or the homeless man that toxic waste
Pre packaged entrees shipped from Corp. and reheated in the Microwave
You might as well just stock up on Hungry Man Frozen poop
Here in WNY only tourists and sheep are patrons
You don't have MOM and POP places where you Live >????
Spot on.... I doubt they even have grills or cooktops there. Everything is microwaved. I haven't eaten at Applebee's in at least 10 years. I did have a very nice waitress though who didn't say a word when she saw me slipping a Big Brewtus glass into my waistband as we were leaving.... that was during my phase where I was 'collecting' bar ware from places I ate at

I've eaten there twice in my life. The first time, I got food poisoning. The second time, I was on a road trip and had no other option. I got food poisoning again. I've never gotten food poisoning from any other eatery in my entire lifetime. I never wish ill will on anyone, but if all of these dumps like Applebee's and Chili's would go under, the world would be a better place.

Applebee's is crap and has been for a while... places like Outback and Longhorn are hit or miss. So many restaurants around me now have open kitchens and fresh ingredients, it makes such a difference. I can't believe that I used to frequent those places so much... and it's not like they are that cheap either. Any more, I would rather spend $12-$15 for a really good gourmet burger than take a chance on a $20-$30 steak at a restaurant.

Didn't they do the 2 entrees and 1 appetizer(or dessert) for $20? I know Chili's did that. They would do that to as promos to get people in the door. The Applebee's near me closed last year. I would do half price appetizers/drinks at Happy Hour. I used to sit at the bar and drink the half price Brutus beers and top shelf margaritas, with a couple appetizers to eat. (Onion rings, nachos, mozz sticks, etc).
And no, the food is not frozen, no pre prepped meals and yes, they do have grills. Not suggesting they are great, but the Happy Hour deals were good. And I recently was at Outback. They are not cheap. The steaks are decent, you get 2 sides but you have to pay extra for a salad, if you want it. And the sides portions are smaller.

We used to eat there after Pirates games just for their after 10 PM half off appetizers. Cheese sticks, boneless wings weren't bad at all.
And then all of a sudden they stopped the 1/2 off deal, and charged a RIDICULOUS 15.99, and you are getting about the amount of 7-9 wings.
Fuckk the Bees. Never went back. I refuse Chili's, Mad Mex and most other chain restaurants too. One of the WORST is Bar Louie. You pay 12.99 for six boneless BBQ wings.

Wing prices have increased like crazy. 15 or 20 years ago, you could get 10 cent wings during happy hour, and it was 20 cents a wing normally. Now it is a dollar or two a wing.
Almost all the chain restararunts are garbage, but not all mom-and-pop restaraunts are any better though.

restaurants operate on marginal profit lines, so many overheads in running one, I go to the applebees near me occasionally and its always full, i always do the 2 for $20 there
it doesn't help when some applebees patrons do thing like this :
