i know theres quite a few of the more senior vintage that lurk in this part of covers,so just a bit of a trivia question for you if youre over 40-ish and care to participate.
the (deceased) television presenter ed mcmahon,according to many,presented prize-winning novelty checks door to door many years ago as part of a company's promotional sweepstakes and was supposedly seen on television doing so......firstly,do any of you recollect this??and secondly,for which company was it??

please no google or interweb searches as it defeats the purpose.memory only.......then feel free to search after replying.

and also how certain are you of any memory regarding this.??

cheers if anyone is able to participate.......sounds trivial i know but it is of great interest to me.

i knew there'd be some who were familiar......must be a tonne of americans that share the same memories...i'm not american by the way.....but am certain i saw clips on television in the mid-eighties of this dude taking checks to peoples front doors.....champagne and balloons and shiit.

It was either Publishers Clearinghouse or Readers Digest Sweepstakes. The Cocaine80's are one big blurr in my mind. Johnny Carson and Ed Macmahon were a very hilarious team

but jerry lewis with the news

So I just looked it up ... seems I was wrong.
Ed McMahon never worked for/with Publishers Clearinghouse.

As the Goose just said ... the late 70's through the 80's was not a time period that coincides with folks having the ability to recollect

Ed worked for American Family Publishers ... a competitor of Publishers Clearinghouse.

Not sure why I made that mistake and was confident in my response, but it seems that the mistake is common for some reason

hehehe,no its not me who's f***ing with you....its reality thats f***ing with US apparently...........feel free to consult the google machine,or watever resource you care to use.......he supposedly NEVER represented PCH,and NEVER went round with the big novelty checks.....he was a spokesperson only for a company most have never heard of before in their lives-"american family publishers"

confounding and baffling.

cool,thats understandable...even if it is a widely held misconception at an astonishing rate.........but do you recall vividly the footage of him at the front door of peoples houses with the giant check??...like,how is the memory of him being associated with a sweepstakes company formed for you??...cos i would swear on anyones life i saw those images....and i'm totally drug-free and alcohol free...hehe

yep,interesting is one word for it......many,many,many people have the same memory...its mentioned on twitter and referenced in old newspapers and websites and movies...but ed mcmahon NEVER handed out checks in our known history...wtf??

It seems this type of misremembering is common, and even has a name ... it's called the Mandela Effect.

Supposedly many people remember Nelson Mandela dying in prison 30 years before his actual death occurred. This false memory was so common that similar, widely held false memories are referred to as the Mandela Effect.

yep,im well aware of it....just didnt want to muddy the waters by associating this topic with it......so thats cool,people are dumb and memories are horribly flawed,i accept that unequivocally.......but how is it that THE DUDE himself refers to handing out checks to winners in the above video when he never did it????

and publications like new york times,l.a. times and even mcmahons OWN biography all link him to publishers clearing house and the door-2-door prize presentation??...do these journalists not fact-check or source anything???in the age of the feckin interwebs??



by the way,do you recall a movie from the nineties starring tom cruise,antonio banderas,brad pitt,kirsten dunst about creepy guys that suck blood???........sharp teeth,pale skin,scared of garlic.
without googling,you got any idea wat it's called??...if youre familiar with it at all.
