I have had dogs all my life growing up but I have never had one of my own specifically. I was wondering if you guys had any really good tips on training them. I want the dog to be well behaved. I have watched some of those doggie training shows on tv and I want to apply those techniques. Also, what kind of dogs usually have a good temperament and is good around children. My parents had a mutt when I was young and she was a good dog but kind of a spaz. The Golden Retriever they have now is a good dog (male) large sized, territorial, but great around people. The only problem is he has all sorts of allergy, skin, and joint pain issues. They have to take him to the vet often and it gets expensive. I won't get a golden for that reason. I know this is kind of vague but does anyone have advice. Probably go get one at the animal shelter.

I've had dogs my whole life and the best training tip is PATIENCE. All you need to do is spend as much time as you can with them. That way the dog will have no trouble "training" you. The key is PATIENCE, and that doesn't cost anything.
Boykin Spaniels make great housedogs and they hunt like a Tiger after stray box.

And as far as the training goes, just remember their attention span is very short in the beginning. There are tons of books out there for advice as well. I would always walk around the house with a pocket full of Cheeze-its {the snack cracker} to aid in the rewarding. I also advise training hand signals with the verbal commands so in effect, it can all be silent commands if you wish. This is not as hard as it sounds. Closed fist facing the dog = sit, flat hand extended out= lay down, shooting a pistol with your hand = bark, etc. Good luck with your new dog

The #1 command to teach him/her with this type of leash is the come command ....that way he/she stays out of trouble.

Greyhounds are fantastic. . .lazy as hell, great around everyone. Probably won't own another breed. They also had a lot of recent closings of dog tracks in Wisconsin and a couple other areas, so the rescues are overloaded

I agree and I have tried to go this route but every time I go to the shelter it's slammed. Even if I get there 2 minutes after it opens nobody has any time to talk to me and the place is packed so I am done trying. I went a few times. I have located a reputable breeder and while I am not psyched to deal with the time and effort of raising a puppy, I know exactly what I'm getting.
These days where I live there are "rescue" organizations that are basically puppy mills/pet shops. That's how they are selling the dogs. Makes me sick but watch out. I was looking to save an animal's life not make somebody some money.

Get an AKC registered Labrador Retriever. Smartest dog you'll ever have.
To avoid any genetic problems, buy from a good breeder. A good breeder will have the hips of their female x-rayed and have excellent or good hips, they will provide you with a written guarantee that the hips of your puppy will be OFA acceptable, sire should be exercise induced collapse (EIC) negative, you should be able to meet the mother and see where and how the puppies are raised.
If you are looking for just a mellow family dog, make sure either the sire or dam has a pedigree with lots of show dog champion titles (bench labs). This will be abbreviated with ch. If you are looking for a hunting lab (field lab), look for field champion titles in their pedigrees. The field lab will be a little more high strung than the bench lab. This will be abbreviated fc, afc, ifc, nfc. The breeder should know whether their dogs are more bench labs or field labs. Most are a cross between the 2 kinds of labs.
The bench labs will be more husky and more blocky heads. The field lab will be more lanky and narrow.
Any pup you get should be calm when you pick it up and lay it in the cradle of your arm. If it won't calm down under normal circumstances, you should pass on that one.
