Little kids are very slippery and sneaky.  Maybe the enclosure should have been a little tighter to not allow this. Maybe the parents should have had a constant grasp on the child's arm. Maybe a lot of things. But all of these folks that are so ready to jump all over the parents amaze me. 
I see parents driving down the road texting while their kids are not belted in.  I know there are irresponsible parents.  But there is no indication these parents were.  I'm quite sure if they realized there was any chance at all of their kid being able to someone manage to slip through the bars and into the enclosure, or whatever,---this would never ever have happened.  
Now the parents are having to worry if charges are going to be filed against them?  Crazy thoughts.  You go to a place like that assuming safeguards are in place to prevent this.  Nothing like this had ever happened before here. 
It is not like they went on a safari and let the kid jump out of the jeep. 
Weird to me how folks are always ready to find a scapegoat when pure accidents actually do happen sometimes.

I say it because a lot parents simply don't watch their kids when they take them to places like the zoo or an amusement park.  They act as if they are in their own back yard but when something like this happens it's the places fault.  If you have a small child, you need to keep on them 100% of the time.  They know this, we know this.  I've been to the zoo many times, the free children are wilder than the caged animals.

sounds like the parents were partially at fault and the gorilla was 0% at fault.  put me down for shoot the parents as well.

It wasn't a pure accident as you so trivially put it. If I slip and fall in the shower, or kick the curb on my morning jog, that is an accident.

Fact: The kid said he wanted to get in the water with the Gorilla.

Fact: The kid climbed under a barrier, through several feet of dense African shrubbery then scaled a wall.

It was absolutely no accident that this kid ended up where he did. This was negligence by the Mom. Although it was harsh to say the parents should be shot as well, they are probably going to wish they had been shot after all the smoke clears. Mom better hope she wasn't on the phone in any way, shape or form. Like you said, these little guys are slippery, and Mom made a colossal mistake by letting her guard down.

Not trivial at all. Accident, mistake, glance away --- however you want to word it. 
I saw nowhere that said the kid scaled a wall. He is 4 years old not 14.   Come on now. It's not like it took him 5 minutes to get in there.  He slipped though or under the barrier and fell in. Sure the parents should watch the kids.  But at no time had this happened before.  You would assume the zoo would have a barrier in place that would actually prevent a kid from accidentally or purposefully getting through a barrier.  Kids lean on the glass and barriers to get a closer look at the animals all the time. So the barrier should have a little more child-proof obviously. Of course, some kids would want to get in to play with the animals.  This should be prevented. Of course the parents feel horrible. Why pile on?  Doesn't even sound right when you say it out loud.

He was clearly protecting the child among all of the chaos from above. He didn't drop the kid from 10 feet above - mom did.
Silver backs are herbivores, very gentle, intelligent and will only charge you without contact if threatened. There were other options is all I am saying. The three other gorillas returned immediatly to their pens when called, this one acted very slowly and cautiously to protect the little kid. The other ones just ran away because they smartly fear humans. Check out the video.

Stories coming out of this do say that the kid was heard saying he wanted to play in the water.

Reports vary on the barrier....  I heard on my local news that the kid climbed OVER a 4 foot barrier and then fell.   Others are saying he went under it.   Anyone confirm which is true?

Raider.. I totally agree. Tremendous fukup by the zoo. 
Every single enclosure should be inspected every day for ANY opening. A child will find a way inside of anything. 

Cincy Zoo is wide open for a tremendous lawsuit but I hope that doesn't happen. Oh wait, that's why they had to gun down the gorilla with a head shot. They knew about that hole as soon as the sirens went off.

The child crawled under the small opening and proceeded over the wall. Then splashed 8-10 feet into the water. 
He said to his mother before disappearing, " I want to play in the water with the gorilla."

.....not trying to sound macho but 100% sure thing I'm dropping down into that enclosure behind anybody's child. My life isn't worth anything compared to a baby. I'm sure a lot of you guys would do the same thing. We're degenerates. Risk win or fail is our business. 

Gorillas scare easily.

Those "barriers" are actually called parents or guardians. The reason it had never happened before is because the very large majority of parents/guardians actually put in the necessary effort required at the zoo. I pile on because as a parent of an 18 month old boy, I 100 percent agree that these little buggers keep you on your toes. I guarantee you mom was on the phone. 100 percent guarantee it. Also, if you are a parent and your kid says they want to jump in the water with the gorillas, and then ends up in the gorilla enclosure, you are a fuggin moron. The parents of this kid are getting the ridicule they rightfully deserve.

Not sure you are even able to. Probably something you can't get over and through. Was probably a tight squeeze for the kid to get through. Probably why so many are glass enclosed.

Maybe; maybe not. But when they want they can be aggressive and do a lot of damage!  They are still wild animals and subject to erratic behavior and extremely strong. For example watch this thick glass break:

Yes. Most experts won't use the word 'accident'; more along the lines of 'unintentional injury' etc.  But sure, lots are preventable.  For example, in the above clip, where the glass shatters---suppose it had caved in and hurt or killed the girl?  Who do you blame?  The zoo?  The parents?  Or the clip where the gorilla smashed on the domed glass?  After seeing these things crack. I probably wouldn't let my kid that close to the glass.  But I don't know if one has ever caved in completely. But no kid had ever squirmed through or under this barrier either.  I am sure that this will be remedied by the zoo now. Because they realize they are also to blame. It just simply doesn't make sense to me to ridicule the parents when they feel bad enough already. I am quite sure no other parent ever imagined this enclosure would allow a child to get thorough. They will now. Every parent wished they could hold their kid's hand 100% of the time; you simply cannot. 
If you let your kid walk to the bus stop and something happens---as very very rare as it is--- is it your fault?  Of course not!  For sure you don't put your child in harms way knowingly.  If you do then you can be ridiculed or charged. 
I wouldn't even sue the zoo or charge them.  This is pure luck and will be fixed now. 
We as humans simple look quickly for a snap reason something happens and a snap scapegoat.  It is not always that easy is all.

Don't worry - the way things are going when the lazy, litigious, crybaby, irresponsible Millenials are parents a few years from now, the "Zoo Experience" will be a padded room with video screens high above their heads showing CGI/Lucasfilm/Dreamworks activity of "wild animals in their native habitat", and there will be a "crying room" at the end for the children that have endured too much during the viewing.......

Just another instance of the innocent, in this case a gorilla, paying for the impulsive, erratic, uncivilized behavior of blacks.  

Here the parents and a child with a combined IQ under 100 cost a very endangered animal it's life.

In zoos and amusement parks, you can only secure things so much and still be open to the public.  A lot of it assumes the visitors have an ounce of logic.  I'm actually here at Disneyworld with my family right now, and at pretty much every ride you could be a complete fool and slip through some bars or squeeze under a gate and get yourself killed somehow.  At Animal Kingdom you could easily jump out of the safari truck and into a pool of Alligators in about 5 seconds, but how can you defend against that kind of unpredictable stupidity and still live in an enjoyable, free society?

A 4 ft wall, dense brush, and a 10 ft drop into a shallow moat near wild animals is more than enough to protect all but the most sub human.
