From the people I have heard speak who know about this stuff, the best advice I ever heard was to have something that you have the best chance to handle SAFELY AND EFFECTIVELY while under extreme stress, regardless of size.
If you lose your mind and can't handle or fire a weapon safely or effectively, it's of zero use no matter how powerful it is. I'd rather take my chance with a .380 that I feel one with than a .40 or something that I don't feel good about even after extensive practice.
I know I've read more stories about a person who didn't properly handle their weapon and TH:AT is what got them in trouble than the person who lost their life because they didn't have a big enough weapon. I think we would all do better spending more time at the range and training than worrying about buying a bigger piece.
That's just me.
