How farcical has this ice bucket challenge thing become?

It's supposed to be for charity yet all I see are egomaniacs having a good old laugh, No explanation of what the f-ck ALS is or how to donate, Let's just pour ice over ourselves, F-cking narcissist bast-ards.

What awareness? All I see is athlete idiot sitting down preparing himself for the thrill of getting ice water poured over himself and then afterwards challenging other athletes, At what part are they alerting you as to what ALS is? or how to donate and what age group that illness or disease affects?

It's just another one of those gimmicks being done in the name of charity with no actual concern about the charity.

You're talking about it right?  Along with millions of others.  Pretty sure that's what AWARENESS means.  Don't sit here and pretend it's athletes jobs to inform others of the illness or it's affects.  If they want to donate buckets of ice on their heads and donate.  That's ALL THAT MATTERS. 

Hell, if they want to dump ice on their head and not donate.  Who cares.  If 10 people watch that video, and 2 of them decide to donate.  It's still accomplishing something.

"I accept the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge"

That is what is said by just about everyone doing the challenge. "ALS." If this was nike.com's ice bucket challenge then saying that gives awareness to nike.com. All you have to do is mention the word ALS and people do get curious. As of today...$41.8 million was raised for ALS Research between July 29th and August 21st.

To put that into perspective...the TOTAL contributions at the end date of January 31st, 2013 was $19.4 million.

And the "thrill" of getting ice water poured over them? Do you know why they pour ice water on you? It's because it gives you a momentary feel of being paralyzed. Being paralyzed is what people with ALS have to deal with.

You want people to make videos explaining what ALS is before pouring ice water over their heads? Nobody is going to watch that. That isn't going to spread like wildfire. That isn't 15 seconds long that you can watch quickly on social media on your phone. It's all about spreading the message and everyone, whether they know to donate $10 after accepting the challenge or not, know that they are at least spreading awareness.

If you were dealing with a disease and someone offered you a million dollars, would you care that they didn't ask you what form of cancer you're dealing with? I know I wouldn't. I'd thank them.

I was angry at first because it made me sick that so many people were doing this just to do it without knowing they were supposed to donate. But after seeing $41.8 million in donations in LESS THAN A MONTH...I don't even care anymore because this is just remarkable. There have been more donations in less than a month span than ALL TIME before this became a trend. If that bothers you than you may be the one with the problem.

Also, nobody knows what anyone's motives or agenda is in taking part.  There's millions of people in the world that would NEVER donate their own hard earned money to any cause.  If they see a celebrity or athlete doing it, and decide to take part...that's a POSITIVE thing.

I'm with KBrick. I no longer care about people getting attention for this after seeing the number of donations. And at a point I thought that just celebrities were the one's knowing to donate but there have been 739,000 NEW donors due to this trend.

This is the lizard brain thinking that dominates our society.  The "who cares as long it's accomplish something" mindset.  Who cares about the method/means.  Who cares about who's doing it.  

So if Phillip Morris executives dumped iced water over themselves in order to help lung cancer research, we should praise them for it?  Or Dow Chemicals writing a check for a few thousand dollars to help research of helping endangered sea gulls?

And to bring "awareness" or "talk about" something doesn't mean it will solve anything.  We've been talking about the poor education system for decades.  Same goes with the struggling middle class, immigration, government debt, health care, unemployment....

I've been trying to make this point on FB a lot lately.  I have a lot of "Half Glass Empty" type of friends I'm beginning to discover.  And it seems to be a common thing that their only reasoning for the hate is "They're only dumping ice on their head cause it's a FAD, I bet 90% aren't donating"  My reply, WHO CARES.  If it takes 10 narcissistic people dumping ice on their heads to get 1 to donate, then so be it.  It's amazing to me that people find a way to be completely negative about something that's clearly working.

Those are a few of the dumbest examples regarding this particular issue.  This is bringing awareness and money to fund research for a disease.  Everything you used as an example has ZERO to do with donations and how this is being accomplished.

But those are known problems, right? You think problems can be fixed in a day? That $41.8 million raised isn't going to find a cure for ALS in a day. But maybe it'll help lead to something. Maybe not a year from now. Maybe not a decade. Maybe it'll take 50+ years and we aren't even around to see a cure. But people are still donating, right? People are still doing SOMETHING. 

Would you rather nobody bring awareness or talk about things because it may not solve anything?

I agree. I've changed my tune. And then you have those people that actually say those that are doing this are wasting money while people in Africa are struggling to find clean water. Are they serious? If they care so much than take your bucket and ship it to Africa instead of pouring it over their heads.

At least I bought examples to the table whether people think it's relevant or not.  You just bought your feelings to the table.  Since I'm "talking" and "bringing awareness" about your feelings,maybe I should be more sensitive to them in the future.

Exactly!!  Or find some organization that provides clean drinking water in Africa and donate.  Easy to criticize for some I guess.

And I'm glad you've changed your tune.  Wish others would do the same.

Anybody with half a brain can bring about examples.  The hard part is giving examples that are on topic with the issue at hand.  CLEARLY.

You can't be this dumb right?  Never mind, clearly you can be.  I've read that article and if you took the time to do it yourself...you'd recognize she's making MY EXACT POINT.  Her point which I put in BOLD for you, is that she DOESNT care if people are doing the challenge and donating or simply doing the challenge.  Either way it's raising awareness and people are talking about it.

You're clearly in way over your head with this topic, so move along.

What side are you on? Both this woman and KBrick are both in support of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge because it's working whether they care more about bringing attention to themselves or not.
