2003 Ohio St and Jim Tressel beat Miami and win the National Championship. Starts a string of 4 straight bowl wins for the Buckeyes.
The method of the Buckeyes during that run?? A pocket passing QB who wasn't a stud QB but got the job done with ball control and pounding RB's.
Then a 41-14 shalacking by Florida. OK. Not to worry. Then the beginning of the downfall. A 38-24 defeat by LSU. After Ginn gets hurt on a return TD and doesn't return.
After that defeat the football experts harped on how the Buckeyes and Big 10 in general didn't have the athletes the SEC does.
Valid point. But that began the downfall of Tressel and OSU. Tressel basically sold his soul and his philosophy to recruit Terrell Pryor. Went everything against his philosophy but he needed the best athlete. Especially since Michigan wanted him. Well they got a couple bowl wins with Pryor but it cost Tressel his job.
Then Tressel recruits Braxton Miller. Sort of a Pryor clone. An athlete. He is a talented freshman thrown into a role very unfair to him at such a football powerhouse. But it goes against everything Tressel and Ohio St was known for: Solid but unspectacular pocket passers with bruising RB's.
My point is the SEC especially the LSU loss drove Tressel and OSU to lose their identity.
And to hear that Tressel addressed the team before boarding the busses to Mich this week???? Are you fucking kidding me?? Who the fuck asked for and/or approved that??? What did that get ya??

realizing that both CFB and NFL have grown to more agil/athletic players and fast potent offenses I think also has to go in part with why Pryor and Miller were recruited.

One thing that doesn't get brought up a whole lot is that Tressel really didn't use Pryor to his full abilities.
Had Pryor gone to Michigan and played under Rich Rod I really think he would have won a Heisman and been able to showcased his abilities more.
Tressel always tried to make Pryor into a pocket passer and not utilize his running abilities as much. Rich Rod let Pat White do what he does best and that is run first and let that open up the pass. Pretty much the same with Denard Robinson as well.
Pryor is a beast athletically. He isn't so much of a passer though. Tressel tried to change that and it really never worked out as well as it should have.
