I joined the military

Question

So this year has been crazy I started it with the teenage girlfriend which didn&#x27;t work out then over utilized the poke and  it ended up getting me another child possibly.  After encouragement from my bro and dad, who are both current and former military, I took the ASVAP a few months ago, and go figure I scored a 94 which is good.  Long story short I&#x27;m goin to MEPS Monday and getting my ship date.  I already passed the physical, and drug test, and so forth.  Ironically I would&#x27;ve sworn in before I met or knocked up this girl if not for the necessity of a waiver for an oui ten years ago. So wish me luck guys if things go well my ship date will be around New Years, and based on boot camp, and my MOS I should be back in May before my girl gives birth.  The way I look at it, I&#x27;m not getting any younger and I need to seize life and opportunities before they run out.  I&#x27;d rather regret what I do rather than what I don&#x27;t do.   No kidding, no bullshit thats my life.

As a veteran I salute you! your doing the right thing.

1) If the girl is not pregnant place all that shit on hold and make sure you let the military purchase any college degree you want while your in there. Make that your first priority

2) As stated above, leave the box alone. Guys in military uniforms are box magnets take that from prior experience many women are looking for a salary and benefits which they can get from you if you stay in there and retire with full honors.

3) I wish you ALL the best. What branch and MOS will be yours? you never stated.

I actually already have a Bachelors in Marketing which basically got me nothing in the business world.  My MOS is 13delta, artillirey target aquisition.  I&#x27;m joining the Army.  Military has never done anyone in my family wrong and my girl didn&#x27;t know I was considering joining, but you&#x27;re right the benefits are great and she&#x27;s been super supportive cuz she understands the circumstances.

Exactly! I had my basic in Ft Leonard Wood A.I.T. at Ft Lee and permanent party was at Ft Lewis...I heard now though they are or were doing basic and a.i.t all at the same place.

When were you at those bases, Freddie? &#xD;&#xA;I spent a good half year there at Ft. Leonard Wood too (&#x27;07 refresher training). And every now and then, I go up to HQ at Ft. Lewis as well (or as they call it JBLM).&#xD;&#xA;Congrats iron722. Welcome to the military. &#xD;&#xA;Lastly, go Navy, beat Army!

Leonard Wood. &#xD;&#xA;Trained with those guys hauling and moving dirt all around as a Seabee there in the Navy&#x27;s "A" School. The base gets a bad rep. (Fort Lost in the Wood and all), but I enjoyed it very much there. Peaceful, quiet, the nice people, and I love the outdoors, so buddies and I would spend a lot of weekends at Lake of the Ozarks. Great times and memories.

if you have a bachelor&#x27;s, you should be going through officer candidate school and become an officer, not through regular enlisted bootcamp.  plus, your asvab score of 94 is very good (in the top 6%).  don&#x27;t let your recruiter screw you over--go officer.

[/Quote]I was at Ft Leonard Wood for basic training in1985, and was at Ft Lewis from 1985 to 1988, way before your time there? Ft Lost In The Woods was great, your right! I was there in the spring/summer. The Ozark Mountain area really is a peaceful and wonderful area to explore.

As prior Navy, congrats on joining.

A few things though, and it's probably too late to say this since you're probably at MEPS right now signing away the next 8 years, but make sure you get everything you want and every they promise you in your contract before you sign it. Seriously, don't let them give you that "it will be sorted out at basic training or A.I.T." bullshit. I have seen that screw over a couple of people.

Also, since you already have a bachelors degree, if you have any student loans outstanding you should negotiate to have the Army pay down most, if not all of them. They should be more than willing to do this since they are getting someone with a very strong ASVAP. Either that or have OCS put into your contract and go officer. If you go far enough as an enlisted service member and make it far enough up the NCO chain, you will eventually be doing most of an Officers job anyway. Might as well get paid for it and get the perks.

Hopefully you are at MEPS hashing all this stuff out right now. Don't just blindly sign papers just to get out of there. BOL on everything, congrats, and stay away from the poke button from now on.

...Bachelors in Marketing...I&#x27;m joining the Army...&#xD;&#xA;you should be a prime candidate for officer training with the Army. back in the 1960&#x27;s I was a Naval Aviator-Officer which was one hell of a lot better than being an enlisted rating and lead to a career as a commercial pilot. &#xD;&#xA;thanks in abvance for your future service. you should really look into OCS

Yeah I&#39;m familiar with the process my pops is a retired Lt Col Im gonna enlist see how I like it and go from there I still will have the opportunity to go to Ocs if I want.
