My friend's standpoint was that it is not about teaching these students to speak their own language but that while you are teaching them English, you teach mathematics, science, history and other topics to ensure that they are having the cognitive and neurological development appropriate for their age so when their English ability catches up with them they are able to put it all together rather than being behind because of their language abilities stopping them from learning the concepts they were capable of when they were younger.
When I presented this a while back, you seemed to think that this was a good idea. But under your current definition, it sounds like my friend is a racist because he pities these Mexicans and Spanish speakers by seeing them as inferior and needing something extra because of the sympathy he has for them and their race/ethnicity and language.
