I like to fall asleep with the TV on (bad habit, I know).  

3:00 a.m - 6:00 a.m. is FULL of commercials for anti-depressants and related drugs, substance abuse rehab options, religious options, etc.  

It's a matter of knowing your audience and they do.  

No different than beer commercials during sporting events.

I like to fall asleep with the TV on as well.. always a movie. I have trouble falling asleep without the back ground noise on..

Stupid people have an innate need to blow their money or just give it away.  Television evangelists, or scammers of any ilk fill a need in the marketplace.

They do not bother me... all a part of the bigger picture.  They won't get a dime of mine.

Actually loudness is not the selling point. The sound is variable from a very low hum to rather loud if preferred... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_noise   It blurs outside sounds, so to speak, so they are not heard. My neighbors have dogs that sometimes bark at night. With the machine on I do not hear the dogs. The machine noise is constant and adjustable in both pitch and tone. It will not block really loud noise. But there are very, very rarely loud noises in my neighborhood.

I would not say it will block out the sound of birds but I am confident in saying it will neutralize the bird sounds so they are not a hindrance to your sleeping sound. (unless the birds are in the bedroom with you...)

Scal... If you are being disturbed at night by outside sounds, seriously consider buying one... Everyone deserves a good nights sleep...

One last quick note...

Go to Amazon and read the customer reviews. I like to read the top 5 or so and the bottom 5 or so. Amazon also has a very helpful Q&A section for all products where people have submitted questions.

Macks silicone earplugs-sold at Walgreens & CVS. Blocks out ALL noise. You'll sleep like a baby.
