There are reports that Holzhauer loses tomorrow, Monday, June 3.
Astonishing ! He's unbelievable. How could he lose ? And, the reports say he lost by miscalculating a Final Jeopardy wager. How could that happen ? This is so out of character !
I don't know if the report is true. Does he lose tomorrow ? I don't know, but if he does, I do believe it makes sense that he set this up from the start. He's a professional gambler. And a freak. He did a trial run by destroying "The Beast" on the trivia game show "The Chase." If you've watched Jeopardy , he is freakishly unbeatable. Vegas is setting lines reflecting this phenomenon.
What better/bettor time to lose ?
The goal is to make money. It is not about bragging rights on Jeopardy. He's clearly better than everyone else. Viewers thinks he is unbeatable. The Vegas lines reinforce that perception. Newspaper headlines report on his streak daily.
There is no more profitable time to lose. And to win by losing.
This guy is a professional gambler. He has access to every gambler's dream: foolproof inside information. He decides when to lose and lays his money down. Or, to be more accurate, has others lay it down for him.
He's not going to be on Jeopardy forever. I think he makes considerably more money deciding when to lose and gambling against himself---meaning he wins. Plus, there is always the chance another savant comes along and beats him. I'd decide to lose while the gamblers share is at its height.
I'd also bet he takes ownership of the whole idea. I don't think it is illegal to hit the canvas on Jeopardy. Why not show the world how tactically brilliant you are by beating Vegas at its own game. Instant immortality ! He aspires to be a baseball GM because of his analytic skills ? If I owned a team, I'd hire him tomorrow knowing he is so many steps ahead of everyone else.
Okay, I'm probably wrong, but as a gambler, I hope not.
