you can damn well bet that a congressman would not give up any of HIS perks or per diem or any other such thing if HE won the lottery, plus she only collected $350K after lump sum and taxes.

Cmon, look at how trashy she looks. She is from the downriver part of Detroit at well. It's like one giant trailer park down there. She will be broke in no time. Probably with 2 more kids by 2 more baby daddy's by the time it happens as well. 

It anyone really wants to start a short term profitable business just sit outside of her homes and sell Newports and tall boys of Natty Light out of a cart.

Yep.  Moral and ethical ones.  It's a shame, and shows how far we have fallen as a society that this question has to be even asked as a defense.

Amanda Clayton, a 24-year-old mother of two, won a $1 million jackpot last fall, and chose to take the lump sum, which, after taxes, was about $500,000.

For the time being, her actions apparently aren't illegal. Legislation is pending that would cut off lottery winners from the welfare system.

More power to her. The Government has unlimited money. Her children need to eat.

Is there anyone here who would really like to see her children go without food?

This isn't even the first time it has happened in Michigan. I believe the loophole is since the lotto is not considered "income" you're still allowed to collect food stamps. I know they're working on a bill right now to stop this in the future.

The most shocking part of this story is being taxed at over 50% on a win of just a million  

OK win a 100 million and cough up 50% you still have more than enough to last you the rest of your live,but $500k isn't as sweet as winning a million

federal tax rate is 35% on the winnings...and the cash value option  took it to 50%..

In my opinion, if you go on a government program, if you come into any kind of cash, inheritance, winnings, whatever, you MUST first pay back what you received from US, the taxpayers before you receive any cash.  How is that not right?

I love the excuse, "well, no one cut me off".  Is society as a whole that much different?  No one asks themselves if what they are doing is right or wrong.  I guess if no one is telling you you can't or shouldn't then it is okay.
She didnt win a huge amount but if she had any brains, she wouldn't have to work another day in her life.  Yes she would have to live frugally but it could be done......but......
I'll bet she still buys lottery tickets and lives like the money will last forever.

Why??? Was it her fault she was poor in the first place??? I agree she should not be collecting food stamps now that she won the lottery but to ask her to pay back what she received in the past is absurd.
