I tried to create a straight line conversion, but what the books are showing doesn't line up.

If team B is a -300 favorite, shouldn't team A be at +280?  The books show the underdog to be at +250.  What is the proper conversion?

     I appreciate all help.

There isn't one for 2 reasons.

    1) Different bets have different amounts of juice.  So it could be -110/-110 for a normal amount of juice, but -110/-120 for more juice ( on a prop bet)

    2) There is a bigger difference in the ML on bigger favorites.  You will usually see -10000/+1400 or so for big favorites. Books usually won't get balanced action on this, so they want to give worse odds

They make it like that to keep you from being able to hedge on a huge favorite

Don't forget that different books will have different amounts of action for a particular side due to the region that the book is located. Simply take for example, a Cowboys game in Texas vrs the Atlanta Falcons. The books in Texas will obviously have different lines due to the local team (heavy action on the local fave) and the same can be said for Atlanta and it's region. Then think about THAT line to other bettors in a different area, say for example, California. There it may have action equal on both sides. Hence no "universal/standard" conversion rate from ml fave to ml dog.. an_light

"Schrödinger's bet." A bet that loses when you bet it but wins when you DON'T bet it...

it's basic math.. but it works with reciprocals.

if both sides are -110... then betting on one side for $1 win = 110/(100+110) = .524.... so to bet on both sides and hedge yourself , would be 1.048.... so casino takes .048 of every dollar bet asuming the casino is hedged.. that's on -110.... basically 1.048 is the pertinent number. and for the equivalent juice, two sides reciprocals must add up to that figure

if we do -400......... then it costs you 0.8 for you to end up with a dollar at the end if you win........ so the other side of the bet must be (1.048 - .8) =.248...

so you need to bet 0.248 to make one dollar, including your original.

$1 divided by 0.248 = 4.03.. but we need to subtract 1 from it for our investment... so 3.03..... so +303....

-400 and +303 gives same adjusted-juice as both sides being -110

and i'll post some other numbers but not show the work

here are some other ones (assuming equiv of -110 juice)

    -200 = +162.5

    -300 = +236

    -2000 = +950

    -10000 = +1640

you see the gap gets bigger and bigger........................... one way to see it is the difference between 0.001 and 0.002 is small, the difference between (1/x) in this case = 1000 and 2000.......... the difference is probabilities is linear, the difference in their reciprocal is curved and asymptotic at zero

cliff notes: if you work with reciprocals i.e. assumed winning percentage, then it makes sense.............. odds quoted as 10 to 1 vs. 1 to 10 are curves and asymptotic at zero

if there was zero juice, then -300 and +300 does make sense and leave everyone perfectly hedged.

once you start adding juice, there is a gap between them and the gap grows bigger and bigger as you get to -1000 (for example)
