Say you were working a job were you make $60K per year with benefits, and it is 32 miles per day you travel in total.Schedule is ok but you work Saturdays always and holidays are not off. Now, you are offered a job were they will pay you $63k per year, no health benefits, but only travel 11miles in total per day, Mon-Fri schedule where you will be home at 4:30 every day and all holidays off.
Current job: Big Company, thousands of employees. Offer: Small marble stone company, only 25 employees total in whole company. (been around 10 years).
Any thoughts are appreciated.

Just a question to all of you guys.
Say you were working a job were you make $60K per year with benefits, and it is 32 miles per day you travel in total.Schedule is ok but you work Saturdays always and holidays are not off. So in the new job you will have to travle less, get paid more, have at least 52 more days off a year and possible more with having holidays off.
To me the difference of the benefits can be made up with the bumped up salary and days off. You can get health insurance and other benefits for the extra 3k in salary easily. 401K and investment benefits are a diff. stroy.
But as the other guy said if advancement is possible in larger compnay you need to weigh that option.

Man, after being in the workforce for several years and working my ass off for the company including weekends, I'd say you have to seriously put a lot of value into any extra time off. Of course, like everyone else says, whether or not you have a family is extremely important. Do research and see what it's going to cost you to buy insurance for yourself, wife, kids, etc.
In my opinion, those weekends and holidays with family/friends will be times you can never make up. Don't forget the extra hour or so you have Mon-Fri too. If you feel the new company is a stable company that's not going anywhere, I would seriously consider jumping ship. GL!

Also, since you got offered a new job, I'm assuming you were looking for a reason. If you don't enjoy your current position, and you'll be moving into something else that better suits you, take it for sure.

I'll take the health benefits and the longer drive. Nothing more important than being able to stay a few nights in the hospital when your sicker than shit knowing that your insurance is getting stuck with a big fucking bill. No health insurance and your fucked if you even come within a sniff of ANY hospital.

Yeah the thing is I am married with kids and while I do need the health insurance for them, I also need the time off for them as well. I hate being the dad that cant get involved in my sons sports because I get out too late or have to work saturdays.
Oh, and as for advancement in my current job, I was offered a re-location move to Phoenix which I said yes to and then was taken off the table for reasons that I am still not aware of. Everything here is blamed on the economy. Always the economy this and the economy that. I understand to a certain point that you can blame the economy for certain things but when you work somewhere for a long time you tend to see what is right and whats wrong,
The only thing that worries me is that the new company is small and may go out of business for some reason. (I am the only one working in my family)

"when you work somewhere for a long time you tend to see what is right and whats wrong"
So true.
Family ALWAYS comes FIRST.
In all seriousness, dump your current job. More time with family will give you added time with your kids. A PRICELESS COMMODITY. You can do more around the home and your wife will be a lot less stressed.
As for insurance, buy a less expensive medical plan that covers strictly catastrophic events like Hospital. Pay the doctor's visits out of pocket, as long as you don't have any long term monthly pharmaceutical costs, you'll be OK.

Tough choice, but benefits our huge and tough to be a competitive company these days without offering them. I think this is a tough choice, but I agree family and fun come first, I work to live, not live to work and you sound the same way.
Doesnt hurt to keep on looking though and maybe you can find something with similar pay + benefits, that is local and has better hours.
It is tough to hear Company's keep blaming moves on the economy, I am an accountant so I see the real numbers and I have seen numerous cases for layoffs and furloughs and other cut-backs while the Company is still making the same, if not more money. Going straight to the owners' pockets. It's an easy scape goat.
I hope your decision works out for you and your family.

no contest man, take the 2nd job...less travel, more free time and more $$$....just a no contest for me.
I work in a bank and from mon-fri and no saturdays, all holidays off and im satisfied.
You are questioning benefits? if u dont have kids, fuck benefits...why you need health insurance at an age of 30 ( i guess )
Sick or not, you always go to a private hospital for a quality health service.
I have a health insurance from my work, but would gladly take those 30% from my salary and without health insurance...
simple example - me and my wife maybe will need in-vitro...now i went to a private hostpital ( of course ) and i must pay the full amount...and my health insurance for a year could cover the amount, but noone is willing to do that shit for me.
heck, i even go to a private dentist for a fucking tooth repair......my word is, insured or not, you pay almost always the full amount and in private hospitals.. i have used SHIT from the money i pay monthly for a health insurance...man if i had a choice to take that money....damn...

Grass is always greener on the other side....but somebodies gotta mow that shit
100 less miles driven per week will add up in time and money. Weekends and evenings off are nice.
So, what you need to do is figure out what the saving will be per year on gas. Say gas is $3.00 pg (conservative) and your car gets 25 mpg (probably not)....Thats another $1200 in savings (probably closer to 2K in reality)....
So, you need to find what kind of insurance you can get for 4-500 per month. Probably wont be that great.
Lastly, like you said, the small company is much more likely to go out of business.
I would probably stick with what you got. 30 miles travel isnt bad at all and the benefits are the kicker.
gl either way
