Anyone here have an installed solar panel system?
If so how much did it cost, how efficient is it and what is the net gain versus what you were told it would produce?
I am not looking for a solar water heater or thermal systems, just panels.
Having no experience myself, I called the free-market. They said coal, oil, and stray electrons were your best choice. They suggested that burning actual currency was more efficent than solar panels and that in all likely-hood Jimmy Carter molests collies.

i installed solar panels in the middle of nowhere northeast, ga for a hunters camp. Simply put, it's still not cost effective (2008 ish)...batteries are still the weak link (pricey). Still nice to have tv and easy hot coffee and cooking though

A good system of PV(photovoltic) panels and Solar Panels(for water heating) will cut your energy comsumption quite a bit depending on how much your sunshine zone is rated at. You can get federal and state tax credits to offset the majority of the cost most systems pay for themselves within 5-10 years. I am a plumber here and solar systems are required on all new housing here. i live in a condo so no solar, but if i move to a house, a Solar hot water system and PV system will be the first things i install.

in regards to this answer most PV systems work not by storing electricity but by "selling" it back to the electric company. they will usually charge you a minimum fee to be connected to the grid(if your system is producing enough to cover your electrical costs each month).

I would also think about contacting a realtor and seeing if you put out 30K worth of panels on your house what that does to the appraisal value of the house.
If you get $$$ for installing and save money over time, and the house will appraise higher because of the panels, I would go for it
