Confront and ask nicely if he can repay the money you generously loaned. If there is resistance just ask him to to walk outside like a man, skip the money owed and beat the fu**k out of him in front of his "crew" bare knuckle, ole school.
He can have the money, regardless of outcome. 
This plan would make me uncomfortable going in. Guys who employ a "crew" usually are not employing them to hand out pamphlets for Jehovah Witnesses. I know this is all theoretical, but I'm not sure the "crew" will smile and high-five our hero after he puts a beating on one of the boys.
I wouldn't just write off the debt. Theoretically, $1100 will buy you satisfaction through a "professional" debt collector.
