Don't know if someone started a thread in the MLB Thread, and I'm too lazy to check, but have any of you guys have heard of Pat Venditte? He is a switch pitcher. Oakland called him up today. If the strategy of lefty vs lefty and righty vs righty works then he will be a huge asset.
The only thing I'm wondering about is the glove. Does he have one glove that he just switches hands or will someone from the dugout throw him the glove he needs after each batter? The attached article doesn't specify.

I understand he has a glove with six finger slots. His glove essentially has two thumb holes.
Professional Baseball Umpire Corporation issued a new rule in July 2008, commonly known as "Venditte Rule" He will have to declare whether he will pitch right-handed or left-handed at the start of each at-bat..he will not allowed to routinely change arms ..

I was wondering about that.
So when he declares what hand he will be throwing with then the mgr on the other team can decide if he wants to bring in a switch hitter?

Wake up kids this has been going off and on throughout baseball histrory. Latest Houdini was a guy named Harris who pitched for Red Sox. He too had a six-fingered glove. The Rule is the pitcher is first to declare which side he will throw from during the AB and the Batter is required to then state his preference for the AB.

Harris played into the mid 1990's and was actually much better as a Righthy. And the left side was more of a goof than anythinhg else. Venditte is said to have the talant. and we could quite possibly see this actually for the first time ever this summer.

Goose ,You are correct ambidextrous pitchers are nothing new .....In 1888 Elton"Ice Box" Chamberlain of the Louisville Colonels Am.behind. pictched with both arms in a baseball game ..
..and the six fingered glove that Greg Harris used is in the National Baseball Hall of Fame..

The last major-league pitcher to throw with both arms was Greg A. Harris, a journeyman pitcher who did it for just a single inning with the Montreal Expos in 1995. Before that inning it hadn’t been done since 1894 and it hasn’t been done since. Whenever Venditte makes his debut and switches his glove from one hand to the other, it will mark another interesting chapter in baseball history.

I think it's a shame that the switch-hitter gets to get the edge against the switch-pitcher. Why not reward him for being so unique?
Anyway...I was calling for this guy 6 years ago when he was starting out with the Yankees. He was posting incredibly good numbers up until 2013 where he fell off a bit but still wasn't terrible and was better last season. I don't quite understand why the Yankees never gave him a shot. They knew what they had with him and drafted him TWICE so I don't quite know what they were waiting to see out of him. Now he's gone, went to the A's and he gets to the majors in his first season out of the Yankees organization so kudos to him for continuing to play all those years and finally making it. I hope he stays.
