Griffin readily answered questions that he has undoubtedly been asked many times — about the awards he received, the weapons he used and the mementos he kept from his time overseas. He had to think for a minute, however, when a student asked if he had any good memories of the war.

“Well. There was more sad than there was good,” Griffin said. “But after I got home, the good thing was the fact that we defeated the Germans. We defeated them and made America still free.”

I served from 1985-1988 and remember it like it was just yesterday. It was something that I&#x27;d do all over again if given the chance again at the age of twenty. The real fact that ASTOUNDED me was this. There were around 20.4 million U.S. veterans in 2016, according to data from the Department of Veterans Affairs, representing less than 10% of the total U.S. adult population. I honestly thought/hoped that the number of veterans would have been HIGHER than 10%
