without hesitation, dove into a pool to save a 6yr.old boy from drowning.
Does that mean that if Pope wasn't there, this little boy would have drowned? And why have a pool if nobody knows how to swim? And why was this little boy allowed to swim unsupervised?

you hear about this all the time. why do you people go in the water if they can't swim. My brother's friend was out on his boat and it was a little rocky that day and wouldn't you know it two people who didn't know how to swim went out on a canoe with no life jackets and tipped over and started to drown. lucky by brother's friend was close enough to save them

But according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the fatal drowning rate of African-American children aged five-14 is three times that of white children.
I dont give a damn what anyone says. That is because of bad parenting.

Let scalabrine come in here and tell me that the reason for the higher percentage is because they live in poverty-stricken areas where kids dont have access to swimming pools. Or that when they go to the beach there is 1 lifeguard on duty. Or insert line here.
The only time I went in the pool when I couldnt swim as a child was the first day I tried learning. Better believe there was someone watching me like a hawk.

I don't think it is so much the poverty level as it is just being "Inner-city" If people grow up without having access or a reason to swim, they just are not ever going to learn...

I agree.. If you know your kids can't swim, then keep them away from the pool or in the shallow end...
I can still remember the first time I had ever swam.... I was staying at my cousin's farm and they had a large pond with a dock. It was about 10 to 12 feet deep and I bragged that I could swim(So I didn't have to wear a life preserver like the other kids)... I jumped off of the dock and touched down, came back up and fought for dear life to get back to the edge by the dock.. Everyone laughed at me, but I was actually close to drowning...

For my son's little league end of the year party(this was 10 years ago now) one of the parents had the party at their house with a pool. Great right? Well an hour into the party one of the kids goes whats that? It was one of the kids (7 years old) at the bottom of the pool. One of the dads jumps in an pulls him out. We start CPR. I must have pumped a gallon out of this little boy. It was a fucked up scene to say the least. The boy ended up dying at the hospital. The kids could not even comprehend what the fuck was going on. We the adults had to give statements to the police. The most fucked up thing about this whole thing is the parents had dropped him off. The owner of the house (one of the other parents), told this kids parents, "we will watch him", and at the time of pulling him from the bottom of the pool, they were both inside. To top it all off, the kid could not swim and did not have a life preserver on. Plus there must have been about 8 adults a spits away from the pool, and none of us saw him go under. I called the dad after it happened to apoligize. I felt so gulity and to this day still do. We had to all go see therapists, just real fucked up. So, I guess what I am trying to say is, I guess people think everyone else is watching their kids around pools, when you the parent have to be watching your own kid, because you never know what is going to happen. To this day I will not let any of my other kids go to pool parties.
I was just readng this and had to get it off my chest.
