I just want some anecdotes from posters here about what it is like to:
A) get sick and simply get treated for that sickness regardless of income,
B) not have an issue with whether a prescription drug costs $4 a pill or $400 a pill,
C) have a child or two children or three or 4 or 5 and you have access to a prediatrician for all of them and that your health coverage doesn't skyrocket because you have another person or several on your employer sponsored plan,
D) you get in a minor or catastrophic and you go to the ER and the first question isn't, "Insurance card please?"
To my anatagonists, I have FULL coverage that I pay for through my employer so save the welfare jokes.
I just want to know the feeling of what it is like to live in a country that believes health care is a right, not a gift.
Can you start a business easier?
Will it affect the number of children you have or want to have?
Does it give you more freedom to change jobs?

Those socialist countries don't have a large portion of their population living off the government and millions of illegals who pay nothing into the system not getting turned away. It's getting that way though. If these nations attempt to take care of all the refugees and the inflow continues we will see how universal health care works, and if they separate the care between nationals and immigrants/refugees well then that isn't universal healthcare at all is it?

We have hundreds of thousands over here living off the government and more than our fair share of illegal immigrants.

I think there is one fundamental difference that separates one from being on the "left" and "right."
No one is given the right to free health care. However, all beings are given the right to pursuing life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Funny how liberals get in the way and introduce government into the equation of free health care.
I am sure our Founding Fathers would be rolling over in their grave if they saw this Sh@T today.
we did have free healthcare before obamacare which was originally Romneycare. it came (and still does) in the form of people going to the emergency room and racking up huge bills that the rest of us have to pay for. many of these people can afford insurance but are too cheap to buy it and figure what's the point if they can just mooch off the rest of us.
but that's not really the point. every civilized country but us seems to be able to provide basic healthcare to its people adn scalabrine is asking those people if they like it. so far, the only person with actual experience in such a system seems to like it.
but i do agree with the point about having less government involved in people's lives. for instance, marriage, women's reproductive decisions, people smoking marijuana, sending our kids to wars for no reason, getting involved in every conflict all over the world and just making things worse and spending a shitload of money, making it harder to vote, making gambling illegal and so on.

This might sound racist to some but I think it's much easier to convince people to pay for it through high taxes because we're not a multi-culti melting pot like the US.
I live in a country with 90% of the same ethnicity so it's easier to relate to other people's problems and struggles. I think it's human nature to care for people who look the same, live similar lifestyles etc.

We do have private health care too. If the public health care can't provide care (too long queues etc.) then you can go to a private hospital and the state will pay for it.

I live in Taiwan and have universal healthcare. I pay a little tax from my paycheck each month.
There are doctors everywhere here with little offices. We have different offices and doctors for each issue.
Each visit to the doctor's office is roughly 4 U.S. dollars. People here go to the doctor anytime they aren't feeling 100% and are usually prescribed 3 days of medication to treat the problem. There are never long ques.
One issue is that each visit is very short, a quick examination and you are set on your way. I would say each time I spend about 2 minutes inside of the office. They ask what the problem is and take a quick look then prescribe meds. If I want more time, I can stay and keep asking questions, they won't ask me to leave or be rude about it, they just have a lot of people to see.
A couple of quick stories. I've lived here for two years now. The fist year I came I kept getting tonsillitis and the medication couldn't solve the problem so I had my tonsils removed. The surgery went well and the hospital kept me for 3 days giving me morphine and making sure everything was healing properly.
After 3 days I was released with all of the proper meds to finish the healing. In total, I payed around 200 USD for the surgery and hospital stay. (I shared a room with 3 other patients, separated by little curtains). It certainly wasn't luxurious but the care and surgery were great.
About a month ago I was involved in a hit and run on my motorcycle. A scooter cut me off and I went down hard and rolled across the street and almost got hit by a car. The driver kept going. I was helped to the ER to get my wounds cleaned. They Xrayed my ankle and cleaned and bandaged everything. They also gave me bandages and medicine to help heal. I was in and out of the ER in one hour and I payed 15 USD.
Compare this story to my roommate in Chicago who was involved in a hit and run accident. A car hit him on his bicycle late at night and drove off. He was taken to the hospital and had a surgery on his hand to stop the swelling and was released after 1 day. He spent a total of 15,000 (even though he had insurance through his job). To me, this is unacceptable and it happens all the time in US. He HAD insurance and someone else hit him and drove away and he payed 15,000. It took him 3 years to pay it off while also paying off his student loans. (I can also get free education here too if I choose to).
Personally I think the rate of healthcare in the US is outrageous and insulting. Universal healthcare works great in this country, not sure if it's this good everywhere else but I would be willing to bet so.

Yes I paid something, but it's something everyone here can afford. If healthcare were practical and affordable in the U.S. you would eliminate residents not being able to pay for it.

When things get complicated or serious you want the best .With all that being said every human being should have the right to free medical care and no one should ever suffer. It's a complicated debate on what should truly be done in this country. On one hand everyone deserves treatment yet on the other hand doesn't a highly skilled physician or surgeon who continues to study his craft each and every day deserve to be compensated more than just a textbook Doctor who passed some medical exam.

My American friends look at me a little weird when I tell them I don't have to pay anything to see my doctor, go to a clinic, or emergency room in Canada. I'm self-employed, so still need to pay for most drugs and dental. The insurance I have for about 45 bucks a month covers it up to 80%, including up to $5 million for trips to the US.
