Maybe I'm missing somthing. Background checks make sure your not a felon and what else?
Can they check your mental status? This guy had major problems.I am pro gun and don't have all thee answers but if the guy doesnt belong to a gun club, is not a hunter, and hasn't had a prior interest as a gun inthuisiast or collector doesn't that send upanyred flags.
And not to sound racist but he doesn't sound like a guy wanting to take up a new hobby.
Maybe they should do a 30 day check on mental status through whatever channels they need to take.
This guy was sick and alot of people knew it. Blows my mind that someone like this can buy an assault rifle.
I am pro gun and a hunter but these background checks aren't looking at the right background and need to looked at in a different light.
God bless thee officer that lost his life and I pray for the 10 victims. As far as the shooter it killed me to see rescue personnel help this scum onto a gurney and help him with his wounds.

As an avid hunter, and frequent purchaser of weapons, I would be perfectly fine with spending 15 or so minutes talking with an independent mental health professional as part of a background check. When you put food on the table and pay the mortgage via gun sales, you aren’t going to care who you sell to. 100 percent guarantee the person he bought it from will claim there was nothing off about this guy. I bet the seller says “he seemed normal.”

Under 5% of violent crimes are committed by people with mental health problems. Factors most often attributed to mass shooting are a history of violence and gun ownership. Other countries are more successful in reducing gun violence. Sadly, US is unable to do what is really required to solve gun problem.

Sadly, there are people in all walks of life that are mentally disturbed and have the capability of doing this. But what can you really do about what you think may happen. Police arent going to take a weapon away from someone just because you say there crazy. Its just not going to happen.
I know a former cop, has a weapon, got fired from the force and is totally capable of this and everyone that knows shes crazy. But that weapon isnt getting taken away from her and shes never threatened anyone, but everyone is in fear of her due to her instability. Its just crazy, but it is what it is. I know Its this weird situation where if something happened at her work everyone if interviewed would say..yeah we could see this coming.

Don't look for gun control laws in the USA to change any time soon. All you have to do is follow the money. Lobbyists for guns are in very firm control. Politicians on both sides know where their bread gets buttered. Sure, the media will beat this to death for the next few weeks. In the end it's crocodile tears and only ONE THING will change. People control.
The population will be standing in long lines to undergo metal detectors, safety frisks, facial recognition and a hundred other BS reasons before we can even enter a grocery store or get a pedicure.
It's NOT gun control. It's people control they want. Get it? Got it? Good.

But I do believe in people being possessed by demons and thinking things they normally wouldn’t think. I also understand bipolar and schizophrenia I have a few mental problems myself (anxiety panic attacks and derealization/depersonalization)

That is correct.

I get what you're saying and agree. It's a commonsense and reasonable approach.
The problem is the "independent" part. Essentially, you are turning judgment of your mental capacity over to a "medical professional." This is a major giveaway and one that can be tailored by politicians and bureaucrats to disarm certain groups of people, justified or not.
The gun control debate is a zero-sum game. If an assault weapons ban is passed, and I think it will be very quickly, the precedent will be applied to firearms of all types. Handguns, rifles, shotguns, all of it. Ammo regulation is next. That's the goal and it's on the way. We'll see.

Bill Clinton (and joe biden, for that matter) passed an Assult Weapons Ban in 1994 but the progressives couldn't define an assult weapon even and the act was declared unconstitutional.Instead of determining the mental health of a buyer maybe just ask the individual which way He faces when he Prays in the Morning. This most recent punter was a Serbian Moslem who thought people were spying on him and listening on his phone. He may have been right as even the keystone FBI knew who he was.

By definition, it's any rifle/gun that can be shot in both automatic or semi-automatic mode. An AR-15 is NOT an assault rifle by definition. If it was, then handguns would be considered "assault weapons". I know your question was rhetorical but wth.
Greedy........I would too. As it is, in the state of Washington, I waited about a week for background checks on my handguns but only about an hour or so for my AR. Being your typical, law-abiding citizen, I'd have no problem with a 7-10 day background check/wait period for all guns.

No evidence Colorado shooter is Islamic extemist according to Washington post. He was born in Syria in 1999 and emigrated with family to US in 2002. Generally, mass shooters are angry young men who have grievance, history of trauma and access to gun. Quinnipiac poll found vast majority of people support tighter background checks. However mental health experts say mentally ill people are unfairly blamed as easy scapegoats because over 90% of violent crimes are committed by sane people. Mass shootings account for under 1% of all US homicides and are hard to stop.

Second amendment is outdated and controversial. In modern era, second amendment doesn't prevent tyranny. Far more effective are elections and separation of powers that make policies harder to implement. Checks and balances in executive, legislative and judicial branches of government.
In 2020, gun violence killed nearly 20,000 Americans and injured about 40,000 more. An extra 24,00 people died by suicide. The reason why US has so much gun violence is obvious. Population has too many guns to avoid violence according to research by Boston university. Americans own 45% of world's civilian firearms. Guns make violence more lethal because guns kill easier than other tools. States with fewer guns have fewer gun deaths according to John Hopkins university. Nothing is done to make communities safer when lawmakers don't care if people die.

So I bothered to look this up.
What did I find?
Wyoming is the state with the MOST guns per capita followed by New Hampshire, New Mexico, Virginia, Alabama.
Two great websites. On American Health rankings you can click on state by state. Doesn't list "just" gun violence rather a combo of murders, rapes, robberies, aggravated assualts.
The two lowest states for gun ownership is New York and Rhode Island. New York's violent crime rate is far above Wyomings per 100,000 population.
I have a lot of doubt when it comes to university studies!

So my point is, agruements like this are disinformation at best.
People kill because we are a society that embraces violence. Video games Mortal Combat, movies Bruce Willis's Die Hards, Predator, Predator 2, we love and crave the violence. We desensitize our children everyday. I was watching college basketball players warming up, their shirts say "No justice, No peace", advocating violence. I watched Juan Howard say he tried to get violent with Maryland's coach because he was raised in Chicago by his grandmother and your taught never to back down. But he's now a grown man????? A role model. Nothing changed in your life? I really like the guy too!! So disappointing.
Nancy Pelosi said she couldn't understand why there wasn't more violence last summer.
To me, soooooo much more than guns.
Look at the mass shootings in 2020. Biggest mass shooting in Washington D.C. on August 9th. How many of you knew that? Why not? Because media kept it limited. The top five mass shootings for 2020 appear to be black on black violence. So where's the outrage? Who's moving to stop/correct it?

Have you ever been to Wyoming? There's nobody there. It's really easy to have the most guns per capita when there's 20 people in the state and they are sparsely spread out. I agree with what you are saying at it's core, that too many guns isn't simply it in and off itself, but there's no denying that the access to guns in the U.S. and shear volume leads to the proliferation of gun violence. We are a nation of cowboys. Once I was hanging with some friends who had friends visiting from England and some guns came out. Why did guns come out? We were't going shooting. Anyway, you hand a gun to one of these guys and it's like handing them an alien artifact or something. Like, "What is this thing even." They are just not around guns like us. Hand a gun to a two year old American though and i'll bet he'll point it with a nature and ease as if it was an extension of his own arm. Hell, i've been a gun nut since I was a toddler.

Stu, my point was; it was stated "states with fewer guns have fewer deaths". I doubted that statement, so I looked it up. All these stats were based on per 100,000 population.
New York was listed as the state with less guns per person than any other state. Is there fewer deaths in New York (per 100,000) than states with more guns? NO.
I agree, Wyoming has 6 people per square mile and New York 421. New York city has 27,000 per sq mile! Big diff.
To say states with fewer guns have fewer deaths, not true. Cities with toughest gun laws have fewer shootings? Nope!
Personally, I have absolutely no need for an "assualt rifle". To each his own.
And my list of violent video and movies a bit outdated, I was thinking what my children saw in their lives. Dated myself!!

Stop assault weapon sales. Ok. How stop purchase of guns. Because these are some manna delivered by an unseen god? I mean no body on this earth ever has made a firearm?
So then what stop lathes cnc presses sandrrs and metal working equipment sales?
Because they can be used to manufacture these weapons?
Ok ban all metal shop classes nobody should learn how to make anything from steel???
This stop weopon s from legally being purchased does two things make criminals from what was law abiding citizens and drives the market underground.
How about you come to a more reasonable solution Tax AMMO. 100 A SHELL. A BOX OF 5 500 BUCKS.
What becomes of this solution what you have is an expensive well made club without bullets.
And if you see a man blowing 100 caps into some one. Well they just wasted 10k. In ammo maybe they had it coming...

With the tax create a college fund for all kids or surviving partner
who has lost a parent or a mate to gun shots. And left as a widow and orphan. So they may find a way to support them selves in the absence of their loved one.

Predator 2 was trash but the first one was a flipping classic. One of the best action movies of all time. Now Predator 2... is the Citizen Kane of action movies and the movie i've seen the most times in life. It comes on so much and sometimes you just need something on for background noise. I saw it like four times in the theatre as a kid and have watched it a minimum of 3 times a year for something like 30 years straight. I've watched it once already this year. Made a post about it. My wife has yet to make it through it. I turn to it and she zonks out. Not really a chick movie but literally prophetic. We are living in the days of Skynet right now.
