an interesting thread; although the majority of NHL fans will vehemently disagree with the unpopular/irrelevant side of debate. in comparison to the NBA, it's quite clear, the TV contracts dominate the sport, both in financial, and marketing value; traditionally the NBA Finals has nothing on the NHL Stanley Cup, and its worldwide appeal, except...humongous TV financial ability, that the NHL lacks in the U.S.A but thrives in Canada. please take note to a very interesting stat, there are 30 teams both in the NHL, and the NBA, both play 82 games, last season, the NHL's combined 30 team 'live' gate attendance> 10,642,259 (including the playoffs) NBA> 11,428,761 (also including the playoffs) you have a difference of a mere 786,502..you can also note that the NHL averages 11,612 season ticket holders per team, in comparison to 10,304 season ticket holders to the NBA per team.
I think this thread should have related to MLS, surely not the NHL, a sport, and a league that consistently grows in popularity; did anyone ever conceive you would see a franchise in Nashville TN? Miami? Tampa? Atlanta? Phoenix? unpopular? irrelevant? not at all...A league that has struggled without a significant and binding TV contract? absolutely, (bring a Direct TV contract to the NHL forefront and you'll see popularity)
