Gulf, Stronach, etc should be ashamed of themselves for putting together this garbage card. Yea, Arrogate and Chrome rematch might be worth it all if it turns out to be a great race, but let's be real. There's no money to be made in the race unless u are taking a shot with one of the FEW decent longer shots and close your eyes and pray for a miracle.
The undecard? An absolute disgrace. Find me a Saturday last spring and summer at Belmont or Saratoga that was worse than this group of races? You won't find one. Regular Saturdays gave us better cards every single week. Complete GARBAGE undercard.
12 million dollar race and:
- this is the best field they could manage?
- a race of that magnitude and they couldn't get ANYTHING going in terms of an undercard?
- Pegasus WORLD cup with "world" highlighted, and not a single Japanese or Dubai or English standout?
And let's not forget about how they priced the regular guy right out of the building for money money money people who have zero passion for these horses to begin with. 50 bucks to get in the door. Drinks, food, programs jacked up to the ceiling. 300, 500, or 1,000 to get a seat in either of the clubhouse spots. A seat to watch the race jacked through the roof. But hey, they got the trendy hipsters with money to fill the building, and I'm sure they have a CLUE what's going on.
Stanford is the only worthy horse I see on the undercard, yet instead of him being in the big race, the million dollar nonsense buy-in will have him on the undercard at 1/5.
I'm just shocked at what a complete piece of crap this entire event is. I was looking forward to this thinking the money would lure some great horses to stay sharp after the BC. Not only hang around for the Cup or a big purse undercard race, but maybe this is the event that would get these horses to go one more race instead of retiring after the BC. Then they race well Peg day and say "hmm we were gonna retire our 4-5 year old horse, BUT he/she is sharp....spring is around the corner, let's go another year." But nope. The undercard is trash. They aren't offering ANYTHING to stop the elite horses from retiring or taking the winter off. Would four smart graded 500k races leading into the Cup been that hard to pull off?
Absolute disaster!!! First and last Peg Cup would probably be the best for everyone involved.
It's absurd that NYRA put together Super Saturday's the entire spring and summer last year. Great horses, great races. And Gulf can't put together a nice day of racing even with a 12 million dollar carrot dangling. TERRIBLE. FAIL!!
