0-for-1 on Thursday, with THE CLUB finishing second at a ridiculous price of 2/5 over the sloppy track. Obviously that should've been a no-play, but it will be counted in the record anyway. Worth noting among all the scratches in that race was honorable mention EMPRESS TIGRESS, because in addition to her 20.2 breeze at the OBS sale (fastest at that day's under-tack show), her most recent workmate BENBANG went wire-to-wire in this race. Definitely one to watch moving forward.
Saratoga - Race 1
#8 SUGAR AND SPEIGHTS (5/2 ml)
2yo firster for the Clement/Rosario combo moved onto the main track to work heads-up from the gate (2nd-of-110) with impressive debut winner READY A.P., who returned to run a good second in a stakes race 6 days after that drill. SUGAR AND SPEIGHTS then worked with older 3yo barnmate SMOOTH PEBBLE, who is 2-for-3 lifetime and most recently won at Belmont on May 21. Looks pretty strong. The track is sloppy today however, and we're down to a 5-horse field after scratches. The good news is, she's not listed as the favorite despite the short morning line.
Saratoga - Race 6
#8 FAN THE FIRE (6/1 ml)
You may remember this one from last week, as I picked him at morning line of 15/1. Crazy how that line can move so much in one week with an unraced horse.
2yo firster for Mike Maker comes into this race off a heads-up drill over the local surface with STOLEN BASE, who emerged from that drill to win on July 23. FAN THE FIRE may also have outworked STOLEN BASE on June 29 at Keeneland (although probably not), as FAN THE FIRE went 2/5th's faster from the gate that day. Also working from the gate at Keeneland that morning that morning were ROTKNEE and SEAL BEACH, who ran second and third in their respective debuts (STOLEN BASE later worked with SEAL BEACH, fwiw).
PS - I almost forgot to mention, BIG INVASION (8/1 ml) was scratched out this race when it was rained off the grass. That's the second time in a row this has happened to him (he was originally entered July 10 at Belmont). Worth noting rider Dylan Davis (whom Clement rarely uses) was named aboard him both times.
2021 Saratoga meet:
Win record: 3-for-13 (23%)
Total mutuels: $23.80 ($7.93 avg)
