Places to avoid in Vegas

The wife & I are heading to Vegas at the end of February. We are staying at Sam's Town, & of course the wife wants to head for the strip a day or two. (I would avoid if it was up to me.) What should we avoid on the strip, & what is the best way to stay safe on the strip? I am a rookie at this Vegas trip & any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Rick. Sam's Town is a nice place to stay. The good thing is they have a shuttle service btw them, Orleans and Caesars (on strip). That is good bc one of the things I aways try to avoid anywhere in Vegas are taxi rides. They will rip you off in a heartbeat. If you have to take a cab always get an idea (from a local) what the expected fare is. If you think you are being overcharge, ask for a cop. You'll see how quickly the fare comes down to a reasonable price.

Another thing to look out for (for the wife) is never hang her pocketbook on the hook behind the tiolet stall if she has to use public rest rooms. People are know to follow women into the rest room and wait for that opportunity to reach over and take pocketbook and run. Just a couple I have. Have fun and enjoy.

Thanks for the info funguyy, Would you also say it is pretty safe to walk the strip during the day and also at night?

the strip is as safe as it can get, day or night, virtually 'crime free' SamsTown is not.. Located on Boulder (crackwhore) Highway, down the street from Arizona (pimp haven) Charlies, funguyy needs to get his facts in order, the shuttle only goes to Boyd Gaming locations (who happen to own SamsTown) your looking at apprx an eight mile cab ride to the Strip...personally, I would avoid staying there, same rates, better accommodations, great ambience, secure, on the strip; in comparison to SamsTown, the Sportsbook is an absolute "shithole" (4; 36" screens, with 40 stadium type  seating) definitely not a place to watch a sporting event...bottom line: "stay on the strip" have fun, enjoy your stay

SportsNet. I will defer to you since you live in Vegas. But when I was there last April I distinctly remembered taking a shuttle near Caesars to the Orleans. Now I couldna have caught another shuttle to Sam's Town. I think Orleans and Sam's Town are both Boyd properties.

Ahh... Sams Town
Back in the day[late 80s-early 90s] they had the best happy hour in Las Vegas.

Anything for 75 cents and in the center of the bar was some good live music.
Id order Irish whiskey, Baileys on the rocks and a premium beer for $2.25
Still a cool place but you need a car obviously.. Have fun

From a former cab driver in Houston:

Avoid the cabs in Vegas. Use some other rideshare where you know the amt. charged before you move from one place to another.  Use hotel shuttles if available.

iPad messed up on previous comment. I'd avoid walking through Boulder Station parking lot at night. You can buy crack across the street at the Budget Suites if you are not robbed first.

Dude, you're planning your first trip ever to Vegas with the wifey and staying at Sam's Town?!?!? That's like going to Paris and only eating at McDonalds.....
Their motto is "Where the locals come to play" meaning "Old retirees getting comps and free sh!t with their player's cards by day, zombiefied  meth addicts scrounging for change and half drunk cocktails by night". You're too far from the strip and even Fremont street where all the action, good shows, great nightlife, etc. is. Can you still cancel this reservation? If so, do it immediately! Try to book somewhere else! ANYWHERE! Bellagio, Venetian, Paris, even the Golden Nugget downtown. Trust me, your wife will thank you for it. Sounds like she wants to be on the strip anyways.

If it's too late, then at least make sure to hold on to your wallet & purse when your watching that "wildlife" show in the atrium. You'll know what I'm talking about when you see it.....

Rio is safe and not that bad for first timers.Park the rental car and have a few drinks,take the shuttle to see the Strip.

I can't think of a worse place to go than Sam's Town for first time.Seriously cancel that asap GL

Don't stay at Sams town . Sign up for a Total Rewards Card and look at Ballys /Flamingo /Linq.  They are cheap and right in the middle of the strip. Clean and safe. If you find those too pricey, look downtown at The D or Golden Gate. Maybe Main Street Station.  Sams Town sucks balls

^^This, but since he's bringing the wife I'd stay away from Golden Gate or anywhere else that doesn't have an open pool. Golden Nugget downtown has that shark tank thing that's open year round, but Flamingo/Tropicana has better shopping, cool pools, cheaper room rates than Bellagio & Venetian, and you're walking distance from everything else. 
Pizza Boy, good to see you're cancelling Sam's Town. Trust us, your wife would not of had that great of a time.
Also, is your trip Sunday through Thursday? If so, great room rates everywhere, and you'll avoid the So Cal weekend warriors like myself.

My guess would be you chose this location because it was cheap as sh!t.  If thats the case you need to look to Fremont St, and stay downtown.  Usually Fremont hotel or Four Queens are the cheapest because of no resort fees and located dead center in downtown.  Plus downtown is way better than the strip, you'll have such a good time walking around there you wont even have time or want to go to the strip.

Downtown is a must do 1 night. Other than low priced tables it's  a 1 night visit. Preferably a Friday or Saturday  night.
Wife typically equals a show, pool, nice dinner or 2 and lots of walking to see all the big hotel casino' displays on the strip. Nothing wrong with this. Take her to breakfast Mon Ami Gabe in Paris. You'll both enjoy it.

WelI guess that needs to be put into some perspective.  I'm a budget gambler, I need my $5 minimum tables, so in that sense alone downtown is a wet dream for me.  Then of course the ridiculously low room rates.  So besides money, the thing I really dislike about the strip is the walking situation.  You head from your room, to the street, to whatever casino is next door....and you're exhausted (and Im in good shape).  You can't walk the strip, it's a pain in the behind.  Downtown you walk from hotel to hotel checking things out and I just love the vide down there.  

I go to Vegas to gamble, eat well and drink well without breaking the bank.  Downtown is my Vegas home for that.

The Linq is a great centrally located casino with a nice vibe,,, the rooms are on the small side but tastefully done and comfortable... 

If you want to stay in the same price range as Sam's Town but get away from the neighborhood  try The Cal or Main Street Station downtown...nice casinos and within 15 minutes walking  distance to 6-8 other casinos.

I always smile when people crush the downtown scene,,, it's fun, safe with nice restaurants and many casinos within walking distance...you also avoid the $8 beers and $20  cocktails on the strip not to mention the horrible pay tables on video poker, the absolutely brutal blackjack rules and tight as hell slots...

SashimiKid has it correct. Mrs and I haven't been downtown in ages because we live south of McCarren Airport and are mostly "locals" people like South Point, GVR, The M and Sunset Station BUT when we used to come visit Las Vegas back in the 1980's before moving here in 1990 we used to ALWAYS stay at the then Union Plaza and ALWAYS had a GREAT time. as stated you get a LOT more "bang for your buck" downtown and everything is a short walk away.

the days of 50 cent canned beers @ Binion's Casino may be gone and lost forever BUT downtown is STILL a MUCH better "value" than the strip and even most of the "local's joints"

Rick, do yourself a favour and cancel that room at Sam's Town.  You won't be sorry.  Book a budget room on the strip or something downtown.  That's where you're going to spend your time anyways.  The Boulder Strip is straight up nasty.
