I make several trips to Vegas a year, and when making plays usually pay with winning tickets from my last trip so as to not have to carry around huge wads of cash on my person. For example, if I have a 4k winning Super Bowl ticket, I will hold and then make 4 baseball plays for 1k each during a trip the following April.
My question...should I be tipping the ticket guys anything when I do these transactions? I've noticed over the years that most ticket writers are not real friendly to me, and they often same annoyed by my presence. I wonder if my lack of tipping may be the reason behind it.
I often have quite a few large cashers and could hit the same guy several times in a one hour period. Seems the more I go up there the greater their annoyance. If it's not the tipping, could it be jealousy that I am putting so much $$$$ into play? Thanks!

The lowest paid McDonald worker is on the counter. You tip'm? Heres my money give me my Happymeal. At the book, heres my money don't f*ck my parley. You're a chump to tip a BJ/Craps dealer, what did he do beyond the rules of the game for you except look at you with contempt like the ticket jockey? If I'm going to tip someone at the sportsbook it's going to be the copycat manager who hung the bad line I bet into, you tip to getgood behavior repeated! Here's a trueism I learned after talking to every kind of dealer- They HATE you... In their eyes there are only 2 kinds of fish they deal all day- them that don't tip and them that tip and it's never enough. Glue don't tie your panties in a bunch cause the ticket monkey doesn't like you..

I want to bet heavy at sportsbooks and I want them to take my action. It won't help my cause if I'm known as the "person" who never tips on his winning tickets. This is not about hurt feelings and wondering why nobody likes me. I'm simply trying to learn what is customary regarding tips with the ticket writers.

I doubt that you have ever met the person who "hung the bad line" that you had to bet into............Would Johnny Avello, Jay Kornegay, Jay Rood, et al even bother with you?.....

When you go out to eat or drink, do you tip the waiter/waitress/bartender....EVEN THOUGH THEY DID NOT COOK THE FOOD THAT THEY BROUGHT TO YOU..JUST DOING THEIR JOB???....
Obviously, we all do...some more, some less..but we all do.
Why, because we understand the nature of a "service industry job" and also are pretty certain that most people in these positions rely on their tips for additional income in what is, traditionally, a low per-hour wages job.
If anyone thinks that a ticket writer has a simple job, just stand near a window in any tourist hotel on the strip and listen to how people bet their money and how the ticket writer has to "interpret" the bet, handle the computer process, and accurately handle the money...which in a busy weekend can be tens of thousands of dollars coming in and going out.
If they do not balance at the end of their shift...under or over....they can be suspended without pay....and these are workers that, in some books, do not even make $10 a hour.
So....next time, when you are next in line and watch a writer process 4 or 5 winning tickets from the guy in front of you..then pay that guy $2431.85 and watch that guy SCOOP UP THAT 85 CENTS...try to understand the reaction that some writers..not all...would have.

When I use to wait in line for the lottery at the Stardust Scotty use to ask who I liked and would I bet the side if it was x number.Later in the morning we would go across the street to the Riv. and talk to the manager about what games got action in the lottery and more then once we would clue him as he would write on the whiteboard that he may have switched the favored team with the dog. Thirdly VegasShill you don't seem to have spent a great deal of time making bets that really matter and the practice of wit seems to escape you completely..

I also use to ride the tram at Circus/Circus and talk with Jay Kornegay when he was hanging the Stardust line at the Circus book but that was a long long time ago and far from what you were implying.
Tell me VegasVic,do JohnnyA,Jayk,JayR,ScottyS,et all bother with YOU, hoping that you'll set the tourists straight and name-drop when appropriate in internet forums in your role as Vegas ambassador? VegasShill seems about right.

I've tipped up front after complicated wagers by asking the writer who he liked ($5 win horse bet) and on the cashing end also..Just take the dimes and leave a few bucks whatever singles are left over..
Back in the 80's,had a good night at MonmouthPark simulcast..I was buying the teller a beer a race and bringing it to him.(Yes he was drinking on the job and not really hiding it).he was punching me winning tix at least three /four races in a row exactas/tris..even one race I gave him the wrong combo by mistake (too late to change it) and it came out.So cool when you have a 'personal' teller to hit every race cause otherwise it might be a loser..Crazy superstitions..
To the OP though you can always cash those tix at the cage and just place new bets at the book.I just don't what you're looking for from the tellers..I get some very hot smiles from servers but it's for what's in my chip stack and side pockets that's that..
I posted somewhere else..you need 2 bankrolls for vegas..One for tips and rightly so and another for gambling. just the way it is.No tips -your invisible when you need something.

Holy sh*t. Tip the sportswriter now? Jesus, might as well tip the guy sweeping the floor around the casino.
Now if I was out drinking I will tip them, but just placing a bet and getting nothing in return no dice for me.
Now dealers you have to tip or it really won't be much fun. No one wants a rude dealer. I put a tip on my play only I won't just throw them the chip. So if I win then they will win.
Tip $2 to valet and you get your car first? Yea, I call bs on that unless you're just running in to make a bet or something. You think these people remember a $2 tip more then 5 minutes you have got to be kidding me.
@vegas gourmet. You tip the waitress/waiter for the experience over the course of the meal. You talk to the writer for what 10 seconds at most? Not even close to being comparable.

A ticket writer has no choice onto whether or not take your action none, zip, nada or whatever you want to say. How heavy is heavy to you? There are limits to everything of course, but the manager of the sportsbooks can make that decision no one else and definitely not the 10/hr ticket writer. I don't bet big at all. Maybe a few hundred a game and usually late at night and they always check with the manager and these are small bets.if you want to get drunk off a $20 parlay you put in on a constant basis then tip the writer other then that just start tipping the guy sweeping the floors it will have the same effect.

"Heavy" to me is when plays are made and the the writer says "Key" and then a Supervisor walks over and makes a decision on wether or not to take my action.
The point of my original post is this....my action is "heavy" and the sportsbooks don't exactly roll out the red carpet when they see me coming. Naturally, I would like good relationships going forward with the sportsbooks I play at and just wanted to make sure I am not committing a Vegas Sportsbook Faux Pas by not tipping ticket writers.
It appears that most are NOT in the habit of tipping the ticket writers, but I get the impression that most who have answered are recreational players.
