Vegas "runners"

I lived in Vegas for almost a year back in the mid 90's and I was always in the sportsbook of the Stardust. Anyways, I noticed some guys that would go to the window, place some big amount of bets without handing over any money. They would then go back to their  seats and record their plays on a hidden recorder. I asked around and it turned out they were runners for some "whales" and they would get paid pretty good money for doing so. I never got around to get all the details and I had some questions on how all that works.

ie. You can only open an account with the casino/use runners if you live in Nevada, etc. etc.

Does anyone know?

You can open an account with certain books if yes, you live in NV.  I suppose you can open an account even if you don't live in the state, you just can't place a bet when out of state.
 
I don't know what this has to do with runners quite frankly.  Not real clear on you question.  Runners place bets for other people, so I suppose that the book (especially the Stardust) may know who your proxy (runner) is, and let them place bets on the account.  I'm almost possitive you cannot do that now it today's corporate gambling holes.  The runners I know don't make that much money, fyi.

Your right about not being to clear on my question but you answered it.  I was basically interested in knowing if I can open an account and use a runner to place my bets while living outside Nevada.

By the way, I think they have limits on totals but I can't recall. Do you know if they do?  Do you think or have you heard that they lift the limits on sports wagering for high rollers?

They have limits on everything, they'll lift your limits but you usually have to meet with a mgr first.

runners are actually illegal in vegas I thought.

Runners should open a account under their own name and place bet when told to. That why it usually someone the boss really trust to deal with his money. Depending on the boss, they usually get a percent from the winnings.

Smokey: that's great b/c I was thinking of moving to Vegas but only if they did.  Low limits not worth it for me. Thanks!

Thanks Piker1, good to know. I guess for now I'll have to move there until I find a family member or very good old friend willing to move there.

If the runners are placing the bets and win, and they try to collect their winnings (over a certain amount),  then they will receive a 1099 in their name, even though they are running for someone else.  Not too bright doing that if you are only getting a percentage.  Most casinos pay the ticket, not the name of who placed the bet.  Hence, the recipient will receive a 1099 if they win over a certain amount.  They won't pay the taxes then, but receive the 1099 which is reported to the IRS.
